Good luck Sunday in the Super Bowl Mike.I would like to see you next year also in Tampa. I live south of town in Bradenton, Florida.
I think what Father Pat is doing is wonderful. My son has just returned from Iraq and I know there have been times when he needed someone to talk to and there just was no one available. He is filling a great need for our military. I am sad that he is leaving our church, but very happy for the hundreds or thousands he will be helping.
Congratulations to Mike Waffle and the NY GIANTS winning the Super Bowl! What a GREAT Defensive Line. Read his comments in the eveningtribune.com and he did what he said they had to do to win this game. GREAT JOB!
Great Job Mike Waufle-makes us proud to be from Hornell.

I would like to congratulate the Canisteo-Greenwood cheerleaders, both JV and Varsity. They are never mentioned in the paper and they won the Steuben County competition at Campbell. We won’t forget all the great times we had. Mom will be ok, as all of us kids will be there for her. Thank you for all that you have taught us.
Love and miss you more than you will ever know. Rest In Peace.

I hope this finally finishes the press releases on Arkport and that things may finally start getting back to normal again. Good Luck Arkport and may you all enjoy your little village.
bumpercarbill i live on madll my life steuben has always lived on madison ave all my life steuben st has always been cut in half because of train tracks and they probley be that way for ever hornell will not remove the underpath
I, too, concure with the post about Steuben Street, I am 68yrs old and remember getting lost in that area and going through that scary underpass as a 2nd grader from Irving school. I was being brave and trying a new route home from school, I lived on Hill Street, we walked to school in those days. I finally found my way home, late, and got a good lecture from mom plus usual form of punishment. Sure would have been nice if that tunnel wasn’t there, about time for a few upgrades in that area. I go down that street now to visit my brother and what a reminder when I look at that underpass. The whole area around there could use some TLC. Former Hornellian.
Condolences to family of Jeanette Jones, We are cousins, from your mom’s marriage to my uncle Bud Jones. Knew you as infants, lost contact after my marriage in 1959,when I moved to Henrietta NY. As your cousin I am praying and thinking of you at this very hard time. Love to you all.

Hello, I seen that the buildings were having problems with the crow epidemic here. Here is an idea on how to get rid of them. Put a scare crow dressed as a cop and put it in the middle of the yard or on the buildings. That should take care of the problem.

I was wondering?? I just read obit of Mr. Angell, When I was in 3rd grade( many, many years ago) at the old Lincoln School I started saxophone and was in the Lincoln School band. I remember my teacher was Mr. Angell, Is this the same man? I did continue with my saxophone right up until freshman at HHS. ( I am member of the HHS class of 1957.)
To those who know Ray London Sr. from Canisteo, this post is to let you all know that he is currently in Strong Memorial Hospital recovering from a serious automobile accident that occurred this past Tuesday. He has gone through 2 seperate surgeries and will be on a long road to recovery. Please say a prayer for my father as he gets through this bad time.

Hello everyone, I did a fundraiser for the Saint Ann’s school 8th graders and I was very pleased with the outcome everyone who took part in it made out very well. I want to thank Deb Hardy and everyone for all there help in making it a successful fundraiser for my daughter Aerial’s class trip. If anyone likes Mia Bella candles go see Deb Hardy in Canisteo at Howells auto sales. Have a great day!
Hello…the Mr. Angell in the obits was the father of the teacher from Lincoln School…I had Mr. Angell for 4th grade and he has remained one of my favorite teachers of all times…I remember he had a bathtub in the classroom to promote reading…My thoughts go to he and his family on their loss. Also, to the London family, my thoughts and prayers are with you…I went to school with Melissa and Marlo. Take Care.
Norma:
Your sax teacher was Lester Angel who lived in Canisteo. He directed elementary school bands in Hornell in the 1950’s. Dee Angel was a great “big band” piano player in the same era, & was also with Steuben Trust Company for many years. Different personalities, certainly, but both were fine teachers and musicians.
Dave Fletcher
Melissa,
Please let your Dad know my family is thinking and praying for him. I grew up listening to your dad along with the Hartman boys and Dwayne Rhude play in the bands. They also played for my wedding. I am so sorry to hear of the accident. Many thoughts and prays.
Wendy
I enjoy the comments….always looking for someone I know. After so many years 1961, seems the obits are the only way I see them. Anyone around who graduated 1961? or are you all in Florida? Be nice to see you at reunion in 3 yrs for our 50th. Beverly

Wanted to let the family of Ray London know that our prayers are with your dad. I remember listening to him play at the Jamborees in Addison, and at my Uncle Ernie’s house. Anyone else think that the village of Arkport is crazy for even having secong thoughts about accepting this grant for a new fire truck. Getting a 250000 truck for 12500 seems like a no brainer to me. Hopefully they put there heads together and figure something out…..

I would like to send my condolences to the Sharrett family in Almond. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I would like to wish a speedy recovery for Bill Brown. I would like to also wish Tyler Bossard and Lucas Cady a quick recovery. I do not know these young men; my son knew of Paul from playing JV soccer against him this past fall. I got home from work last night and saw that my son was crying; I of course held him tight. In just alittle over 2 years he will be getting his license. I feel terrible for this tragedy. I just wanted everyone involved to know – that someone somewhere is thinking of you and holding you close in their hearts – There is one more wonderful angel that God has chosen for above.
God Bless everyone.
Susan

Well, I’m browsing through the comments and see a few regarding the HHS Class of 1973 reunion. Of course, from the same few interested classmates!! Butch, Nancy and Rodney. When I picked up the list of “kids” who were members of the Alumni Association I was discouraged. There are only about 100 of us. That left Kim and me and now Bob Evans to work up the enthusiasm to track down 150 more!!!! I don’t think I’m there! A good start for a get-together for our class would be for people to register with the HHS Alumni Assoc. Ok?
Wanted to wish my brother Ronnie Feenaughty a “Happy 40th Birthday”
Sorry I am a day late!
Love Ya Lots!!
Martha,
If everyone registered with the Alumni, life would be good for all class reunions.
Did you get email addresses or regular mail addresses from the Alumni? I would venture to say that the 100 or so classmates probably have contact information on other classmates they have communicated with over the years. I know I have a current address (mostly email) for maybe seven or eight but don’t know if they are members of the Alumni. I suggest an initial letter be sent to the 100 addresses you now have asking for contact information on any other classmates.
I’ll be coming to Hornell for my father’s 1st anniversary Mass the 26th but I’ll be returning home the next day. Maybe we can get together sometime that Saturday night or early Sunday morning to brainstorm some ideas??? I believe you have my home email address and I’ll follow this up with an email to you.
Does any one else have suggestions on tracking down missing classmates? I wonder if they are still hanging out at the Arkport Dam?
Class of 1973, we need your email to compile a list of email addresses for next year. that way we can contact YOU to get your home address and info. Please send any email address at this time to: kimbee55@hotmail.com or if you have Bob Evan’s email or Martha Marino’s email, send it to them. thanks
Also, Chuck Osmin…I did not know your son, Josh was in the military. email me, so I can contact you. thanks, Kim
Calling all graduates of the Class of 1973. Kim,Martha and myself are looking for your help. there are some many of you to contact, we need you to contact us. At that point we can decide what we will be able to do to get us all (or as many as possible) together.
I can be contacted by e-mail at revans12@stny.rr.com
thanks and God bless you all.

I love this site. It takes me home and helps me remember. I look forward to reading it everyday. Thank you Evening Tribune.
My condolences to Phil Evans and his family on the death of his wife Ruth (Rhodes) Evans. She was my HHS class of 1957 friend, we renewed our friendship because of this site. I will miss finding notes and cute little stories from her on my email. Cherish her memory and as I was told 9 years ago, cry, tears heal.
GOD BLESS THA GENE BREWER FAMILY , JOE , DAVE , and LITTLE RUNT TRACY , GOOD LUCK …
Carol Burdick was a blessing to many. She will be greatly missed.

To my good friends the Livingston’s, my heart and prayers go out to you in your time of grief for such a wonderful lady as your Mom!
I will miss her as she was truly an awesome lady who always welcomed me into her home and treated me like one of her own! Wilbur be strong my man! Your mom is with the Angels now and I know God has a special place for her!
Tracy
I am trying to find joan jensen of ms. If anyone of her relatives in Hornell know if she is still living in Ms. please let me know. She was the former Joan Herbert thank you. Doris Councilman
Dear “Livingston Kids”
The obiturary for your mom brought back a host of memories for me. One of her special qualities that your may not know was that of being a “mentor’ for neophyte nurses such as myself. I will never forget the summer of 1972 when she taught me( then a student nurse) working with her @Bethesda the nuances of working nights. Her advice ranged from “clinical hints” to my all time favorite of “eating breakfast as if it it were supper”
My mom always wanted me to be”as good as nurse as the “Dagon Girls.”….not quite sure if I ever could accomplish that goal but have done my best!!!
With lots of love and many happy memories
Catherine Hogan
Congratulations Sgt. Ryan York. This former teacher is very proud of your commitment to the US.
I am outraged. The gas prices this week were on Wed, I paid 3.44 a gallon, that night the price went to 3.53 which shocked me. Then on Friday. the prices are now 3.65. How can they raise it so high and so fast? I am struggling as it is to eat, work, and manage my bills. and if you are a middle income family, there is NO HELP. This is so awful. Maybe if we hadn’t spent billions on War.
On Sunday April 27 will be the first year anniversary of my Dad’s passing. This past year has been so hard getting by all the “first times” without Dad…. So I’m here to urge everyone don’t let a day go by without letting your love ones how much you care about them…. You never know when it could be your last time…
We miss you and love you Butch, Dad, Papa and Great Papa ……….
Judy Ermy Ordway
Judy-you are so right! Time passes so quickly and sometimes we take for granted the love of those that are closest to us. It’s been two years since I saw my Aunt Dee and although she barely recognized me when I saw her last, I made sure that I spent time with her and let her know that the person that was sitting with her loved her very much. She died this week. She was such a kind and loving woman. I spent many weekends with her after my mother died. I’m very sad that I can’t make it home for her funeral. Her roommate at McAuley Manor, Lou Livingston, passed away this month as well. She was a wonderful woman. Jim, I was truly sorry to hear of her passing.
To Doris Councilman…Joan Jensen is my aunt. She is living in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. If you contact me, I can give you more info. My phone number is in the book. ….Juli Evans
Just wondering if anyone knows how Valerie Barcomb from Hornell is doing these days. Haven’t been in touch since I moved.

Downtown Hornell was awesome on Thursday afternoon, May 1st. Mayor Hogan, June Pieklo (HPG), Relay for Life members and numerous community members came together to color Main St. PURPLE. Hornell High school art teacher, Mr. Kull, and his Advanced Art class displayed amazing talent with their work on the sidewalks. Thank you to everyone involved in this project. Your time brought awareness to this terrible disease that interferes with so many lives. Mr. Elwell, thanks for the job you and your students did in the rotunda at HHS. Please Support Relay for Life.
Wilber loved seeing you after 20 plus years when home. I am so sorry for your family loss of such a special lady. When you get settled, drop a email. dargra02@aol.com. We have more to catch up on. Talk soon.

Happy Mothers day to our MOM ANNIE our Aunt Jo and all the Mothers and Families in Hornell….
Jim & Rosie Eveland
I was just perusing the guest book and saw the initial comment from Judy Ermy Ordway and the follow up from Mary Kay Dodd George, both classmates of mine. I could not aree more with the comments from both. My mother, Helen Corbett, also passed away in 2007 (March 15th) and not a day goes by that I don’t think of her. Today is the second Mother’s Day since she passed away so I’ll be hinking of her even more today. We tend to take those around us for granted far too often and don’t tell them how much they mean to us until it’s too late. Take care- Chris
DAD, WE all hope you have a Great Birthday , on May 19th. We all love ya!!
I’ve been following the thread started by Judy Ermy. I’m familiar with all these folks. Anybody that played organized baseball knows the Ermy family, I know most of the Livingston’s pretty well, grew up down the street from Mary Kay, etc. The obits are becoming all too personal these days. My Dad passed on 5/12/98 – 10 years ago this week. I still think of him every day. Dad worked on the railroad over 40 years. And even though I live near Charlotte, NC now I’m still less than a mile from the RR tracks. So every time I hear a train whistle I stop and say “Hey Pop” and have a little chat. The pain isn’t as sharp anymore – more of a melancholy, I guess. I still miss him a lot, but feel he’s still near to me. Good luck with your grief everybody.
WE WOULD LIKE TO WISH OUR DAD AND MOM AND MY GRANDPA AND GRANDMA ( MR & MRS. RODNEY H QUICK ) A ” HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ” THEY WILL BE MARRIED 21 YEARS ON MAY 23. WE LOVE YOU BOTH !!!!
We NEED your help!!! We cannot find the following…yes, I know some we know where abouts they are, but I need a CURRENT address…if you talk, see, hear of them, anything– please tell them to email their address or email to hornellhsreunion98@yahoo.com to receive an invite. We would rather email them one and have them print, complete and send back to avoid postage cost and it would be quicker. If you really wanna help, someone gave me http://www.zabasearch.com to help track’em down.

Thank You And Have The Very Best Day You Can
I just wanted to let everyone know that Mervin Spicer is in the Hornell Gardens. Please send a card. It would really bighten his day.
We came through your city yesterday for a nice ride. My Mom noticed a fellow playing guitar, yelling and gesturing loudy on the Main St./Church St. Corner. She was afraid to get out and shop. Is there a reason why he was there? Have others seen him also?
Would like to say Congratulations to Christopher Dailey and Megan Nisbet on their Graduation from SUNY Brockport. Way to go!!

i check in every now and then anyone remember the herbert family?
To Tom Kraft,
I too have viewed the comments regarding the passing of Mr. Ermy and Mrs. Livingston. I also remember them both fondly and wish my sincere condolences to their families. As for your Dad, I know you remember him coaching our old VFW little league team. He was a good man and had a positive influence on all of us. Funny you should mention the train whistle thing. My dad worked with yours on the railroad and I do the same thing every time I hear a train whistle. They may be physically gone, but they will always be with us. They are part of who we are.
The guy sings every Sunday and sometimes Saturdays. He is supposedly praising God and conducting a public sermon. It is quite annoying and rude to people driving downtown.
Can anyone tell me what is up with the kids playing basketball in the streets! I have many times seen some young kids playing ball at the intermediate school grounds and they always semmed to be having fun. I am now seeing these same kids playing on Hill St. in the road.Who gets the ticket when a kid gets hurt? Who gets sued when the kid gets hit? They should not be placed on a sidewalk where people have to walk and they certainly shouldn’t be used by kids that have to play in the road!
Guestbook is nice but you still have listings way back to the beginning of the year…too much to sift through. Maybe keep it month by month? Just a suggestion.
GOOD MORNING TO YOU ALL HAVE A VERY NICE DAY
MY SON B-DAY IS COMING UP IT IS ON JUNE 2, THE BIG 43AND HOLDNG HA HA FROM HIS MOTHER LOVE YOU SON ALWAYS.
RONNIE POTTER
Shame on you Hornell…….If you let these developer’s tear down the addist house.
Have you no Conscience?? Urban renewal has revealed it’s ugly head again in Hornell!!
How can anyone that is praising God be annoying and rude?
I would like to take this oppertunity to say “CONGRADULATIONS” to the class of 2008! And remind ALL of our kids about the dangers of drinking and driving. This is always the time of year that we read or hear on the news about High School Children “partying” and we all dread hearing the horrible things that come along with it. Kids, be smart! Think about your families, others & your future. Don’t get into a automobile with ANYONE who has consumed ANY alcohal or Drugs. I know you feel that it will never happen to you, but it has and it does. PLEASE KIDS, BE RESPONSIBLE, DON’T DRINK!!!!!!! A proud parent of a Senior of the Hornell High School Class of 2008.
I am trying to find information on my family. My grandmother was Juanita (Smalt) Lafler. Anyone have any kind of information please email me at jl_angel_94@yahoo.com, and place smalt in the subjuct line.
Happy Birthday to Jason Woodworth on 5/24 Love you always, Mom
I have a comment on what Sue says ,
Well I look at it this way some parents have the say where there kids go and play ball and for some reasons maybe they can leave the door yard and playing in the street is the only solution! And if your in your car then you should watch where you drive ! Its also the drivers responsibility to be aware of where he or she is driving ( Thats any where ) I see there is no harm in these kids playing where they play ! Now if these kids are younger then there is a problem because the older ones know how to get out of the road unlike the younger ones !And on the sidewalk simple ” Watch where you walk ” ! My opinion KIDS ARE KIDS they aren’t getting into trouble so leave them alone !
Hello
I live in the UK. 40 something years ago I had a penpal who was a young marine, that young man went to Vietnam and suddenly stopped writing to me. Two years ago I found his name on the Memorial wall Washington. He was a son of your town and his name was Joseph william Barillo. Someone sent me a copy of his picture from his yearbook this was a wonderful gesture. I guess I really wanted to say that this hero was never forgotten here in England by that young schoolgirl who is now an old grandma. Rest in Peace Joey
I, too, am concerned about the kids playing ball in the road on Hill St.(or any other street) I was driving toward them the other night at 9:00pm+- and a boy stopped playing, held the ball, playing “chicken” with me. I wanted to stop and talk to the parents…but didn’t…knowing what good it would do,(none). I’m all for kids playing and having fun…but not in the road and not at the cost of someone getting hurt.
What goes around, comes around…when I was a kid (that’s makes me sound old!) playing release, hide and seek, ball, etc. on Armory Pl. on the sidewalk and yes, in the street…from across the street, old Mrs. Shoemaker would yell at us kids…”go play at the park!” We would go running for home when that “whistle” from my dad broke though the night air. So you see, I want the memories for these kids now that I had. But not that of someone (who doesn’t belong in the road), being hurt or killed by a passing car, (that does belongs in the road.) Don’t be fooled…It CAN happen to you.
To Diane…Yes, I remember the Herbert family. I’m one of the seven Herbert kids that lived on Armory Place! (1950’s-1980’s)Which ones are you speaking of? And what DO YOU remember about them?! (us)??? hmmmm….
I agree with Sue and her comments on the kids playing in the street. Near Maple street is a similar issue, and it not only includes the kids playing basketball in the street, but hanging out on other neighbors property, leaving trash, destroying things – making neighbors afraid to walk down the side of the street.
Hello to all friends and family. It’s been a few years since I’ve lived in NY. I moved to Charlotte for awhile now in Myrtle Beach. I frequently check in with the tribune and I’m shocked how much Hornell and Canisteo has not changed. I read about how Hornell is trying to grow but it seems that the powers that be have so many hurdles to overcome that it turns any prospective commercial business away. Hornell needs some change and it seems the only people that are scared to do so are financially set, retired and have nothing else better to do than to grip about change. Look at the current article about the Adsit street house, is there anyone in that picture that’s still working? Hornell needs to think about the generation still in school thats directly affected by the decisions your making today, how will their future brighten by keeping the adsit st house? I cant believe this got into the paper, two people saving a life…DEFINITLY (great job!) this NO. Look at the guestbook your reading from. How many people say they are FROM the area, but no longer live there. Why do you think that is? I’ve talked to many people down here (SC and NC) that moved from NY including classmates saying that their hometown is economically stale. There are no jobs. We learn to do business in college and learn our hometown is not a place to do it. I did not move because I wanted to, I moved because I needed to. I’m looking forward to the day my girl and I can move back to my hometown and start a family… I hope, but not now. Anyone reading, thanks for listening to my two cents. I’m not hard headed so any other views are welcome maybe is just me.
By the way here is something to ponder about:
Census info from 2000-2006

nice work stan brownell,so by all means acording to the census from 2000 to 2006 shows hornell is not a city afterall, but yet hornell still recieve grants as a city. now with the new reapraisals of the homes in this area and the ever raising taxes, are you sure that you want to return to hornell? would you want to bring a new business to the area? just wondering.ty
“Sue N. from Rochester” or whatever your real name is, your story doesn’t ring true. Rochester, like any city, has its own street evangelists which you and your mother would have learned to put up with if you really lived there. I do, and have for 30 years. So, “Sue” Just come right out and say you liked your town better without street preaching, and this person’s behavior annoys you and makes your shopping (or driving by) less pleasant. People from Rochester might very well enjoy a drive through Hornell, and we certainly know how to ignore a street preacher. He/she won’t scare “mom” or keep her from getting out of the car. Freedom of speech is one of those things that heroic people have given their lives for. We honored them this past Monday.
I recently stumbled on this website and wanted to share it with you. It’s about a program called ‘Operation Happy Note’ which
was started by Steve and Barb Baker when their son deployed to Iraq. They sent him a guitar since he forgot his back home, and his buddy wanted one too. So Steve and Barb decided to start this program to put musical instruments in the hands of soldiers
overseas. Problem is, the demand is greater than the funding. I will be donating some money to this program myself and if anyone else can help out I know it would be greatly appreciated. Please help out in any way you can, even if it’s just by letting folks know about it.
Check out the site at http://www.operationhappynote.com

I love the new look. I enjoy being able to keep up with the hometown news even though I live in Florida now. Great job on the new site and thanks for providing this service.
To Vern Taylor: Class of 1968 Reunion????
Did you guys have high school back in 1968, or just meet at the wagon on the trail and count coffee beans and practice sending smoke signals? Do you remember Al Blackwell at the Little Church? I was there too. Guess who I am and I’ll tell you! In the meantime, tell Bev I said hey.
Stan
Can you give a web site where you got this information from. I would like to see the population of Hornell from 1920 up to where you left off. Thank you.
Fran
In response to Stan Brunell: Your heart is in the right place but your reasoning is all wrong. The four lane highway that came into Hornell to bring prosperity is the same highway that took away irreplaceable landmarks and is leading the businesses out. More importantly Hornell needs to keep the charm that it still has. We don’t need another parking lot by tearing down the Addsit house; I believe the mayor is doing the best he can. What Hornell really needs is strong economic draw that can bring folks in to fix up & rebuild. Remember the railroad along with urban was a bad combination that has left a very difficult job for any administration to over come.
Lastly, Hornell still has the wonderful heart it always had… it just needs to be started again.
That “guy” that plays the guitar on Sunday mornings on Main Street is NOT praising God. If you listen to what he is saying he is denouncing God and is very offensive. If you or I did it I’m sure we would be hauled away quite hastily…why isn’t he?? I’m all for freedom of speech and religion but this guy is a nut and obviously not well balanced. Isn’t he guilty of disturbing the peace? Shouldn’t he be warned by our local police dept. and then if he continues be arrested? I know I would expect that much if I were to act in such a manner….hmmmm….there’s an idea.
Just a few quick comments. 1. A quick shout-out to Tim Sherman-nice to hear from you. 2. As for the Adsit House, the preservation group needs to quit spending money on lawyers obstructing this sale/demolition and buy this property itself-then you can decide what’s best for this property instead of infringing on the owner’s right to dispose of it as he sees fit. 3. As for the kids in the street-this, to me, is one of the small-town charms of Hornell. I’m sure they’d rather play basketball at one of the public courts but if you take the time to look you’ll probably find that all the rims are bent from people hanging on them(and new ones will be ruined within days of being replaced). I have a couple of these situations on my street but I don’t mind slowing down and giving them a wave on the way by-at least I know they’re here and not hanging around downtown or breaking into people’s cars. Be careful what you ask for…!
I guess all it would take is a call to the local police and maybe then this man could get the help that sounds like he needs. If there are so many concerned citizens tired of the annoyance that he gives; then by all means, make the call – do what it takes, step up to the plate.
I am not against the kids having a basketball hoop set up. I am against the fact that they are playing in the road. If you are going to purchase one of those hoops, wouldn’t it make sense to atleast have a paved area on your own land to put it on. I too am a Hornell native of 46 years and I was taught not to play in the road. Also, in the winter we have to clear the sidewalks, so why is it not the same in the summer. I think we need a code enforcement officer to take a look at this .
Hey Sue,
Why is it there is always someone want to ruin it for the kids of this town ! And if you call code what type of person does that make you We are not living in a world where there is no freedom ! Well I guess when these kids can’t play and they decide to break into cars like Tom said then I guess you get what you ask for!~ And the kids should complain about the adults and how they are chased home from the parks! You need to find something to do your self and leave the kids alone ARE THEY REALLY HURTING YOU AND DOES IT REALLY TAKE ALL YOUR TIME TO WATCH WHERE YOU DRIVE ! And if you can’t see these kids then you shouldn’t be driving right ” THIS IS THE USA RIGHT ! WHERE IS THE FREEDOM !!!!! ANSWER THAT ?
To Lisa Pelton: May you have a wonderful weekend and a great recital this year. You’ve worked hard and now the hard work pays off. You’re dreams have come true all these years and it is nice to watch you and your students. “When You Wish Upon A Star” your dreams do come true….much Love, Mom
I, too, am a resident of Hill Street. I was chatting with a neighbor the other day regarding “THE HOOP.” Someone had posted a comment about how the traffic needs to slow down. What about the discilpine that those kids need to understand that you do NOT throw a ball over someone’s vehicle. For what ever reason the kids seem to think that it is ok to play in the streets must be a refelcion of the (insert your choice of words here) parenting. Does anyone have a sence of respect for their neighbors? Who wants to hear that ball “thudding” until early morning? What kind of example are you setting for your kids by showing them that it is ok to “lounge” on the sidewalks? And as far as blocking the sidewalk, I agree that if it has to be kept clean in the winter, it should be clean in the summer. Is anyone interested in a petition????
Scott, Happy 37th Birthday today. You are the best I hope you enjoy your day and have many many many more. We all Love You So Much… Thanks for being you………….Tray & the Kids
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
The kids on my street (Hornell st) Like to stand there and wave you on then run right out in front of you when you go so you blow your horn get them to flip you the bird and say nasty thing when i have my kids in the car there dead beat parent come out screaming not caring about any of it… let me go on they leave bricks in the road almost every day again the parent DONT CARE!!!!!! if its not bricks its glass pans lids the get smashed then there glass in the road um let me see not just little sticks but tree limbs we had to back up and turn around and go around the block to get home the other week let me not for get i have talk to the parent and got the THEY DONT CARE attitude..we own our home and unfortunatly have to put up with SLUM LORD AND UN CARING PARENTS its my home my street treat it nicely thank you for letting me vent!!!!!ps………. there a open field at the end of our street go play there and stay out of the streets.
I have been following the issues of the kids playing in the street on Hill St. It sounds like these kids are just playing and having fun (isn’t that what kids are suppose to do?) I agree that their parents at least know where they are and that they are not stealing cars or causing problems on main street or in the Mall area. I say leave the kids alone, let them be kids, we certainly had our bad habits when we were growing up. If these kids only play ball in the street leave them be.
I am to a parent and I am doing whats best for my child and if it means play in front of my house to protect them then so be it ! Because I remember when I was young I to played in front of my mom and dad house and there was never anything said ! Now all someone what to ruin it for these kids ! Yes I understand the road isn’t the safest place to play but if you really go to the parks it’s not either ( One parents son got chased home by someone in a car and some of these kids are meanand want to take control)You need to get use to it I to pay my Taxes and live here, these kids aren’t hurting anyone really ARE THEY ? Quit complaining Find something to do ! If they do some thing wrong go talk to the parents and it’s not always the parents fault look around you ! I know for a fact there is a noise ordance at 10 pm and these kids aren’t out past that !I guess Freedom isn’t a FREE!!!
I certainly enjoy all the comments and the discussion of the way things used to be and things are so much better and nicer somewhere else. Hornell has no jobs or no future, this is all personal perception. I have made a life in Hornell, I have`nt always been Mayor and the reason I became Mayor is becasue I wanted to help the community I love. Of course there are always critics and second guessers that is part of the drill. But rest assured Hornell is in a much better position than it was 23 years ago. Do we have more to accomplish? Yes we do. Notice I say WE as it takes more that one person to create a perfect living situation. I have long since stopped worrying about he liked me and who did`nt. Hornell is a great community with a lot to offer, could we use more jobs? absolutely, so could every other upstate new york community. Do not sell this community short, I do not and never will. Oh, and by the way, once a community is chartered a city it always remains a city, the smallest city in the State is the City of Sherrill, it has 2,000 people. While, many of you discuss our demise, I will continue to dedicate my efforts to continually working for the betterment of my community. Thanks for listening.

Mayor
Carrie Button of Wayland passed away last evening after cancer struck her down very quickly.
I just wish to say good-bye and God bless to Carrie. To Ron Sr., Ron Jr., Lisa, Scott and their families…my deepest condolences.
God Bless!
Wow…What a joy it must be to live among you folks on Hill street. Kids, no kids, wreckless driving, bad parenting, it’s all been mentioned. It sounds like the parents of those kids that are playing in the street could probably take a hint and ask the kids to be more respectful of the motorists passing by. Kids have no idea how serious drivers take kids being in the street; On the other hand, a Code Enforcement Officer complaint? Come on, really. Be patient you drivers. Sounds like you have forgotten about being a kid wanting to play ball. I grew up there on Spencer Avenue and our neighborhood was full of kids from 6 families. Mutual respect was the watchword. Cars had the right of way, but when they were not there – GAME ON! Come on folks, don’t take yourselves so seriously.
ok time to interveen here about playing on the streets.i believe the mayor can recall this as he once played in the streets too. i was raised on albion street (justy off hill street) we had our days of playing in the street lets see kick the can, tag, football(flag), baseball kickball the list goes on and on and on.oh yes we got yelled at by mr sweeney(god bless him) we even got yelled at by our parents too.and if we didn’t mind then we got a lilac switch used on our back side.
we had the playground on franklin street to play in but guess what, the gate was locked and if we climbed the fence, guess what, the police were there to escort you out.then we had the hornell brewry parking lot to play in ,well we always ended up with bruises from the cinders and also got run out of that lot from playing.so where does this lead us to?
it should lead us to this .tell the children to play in their own yard.
Hi to tom craft we went to school together.
i need to add alittle more here.
Respecting other people and their rights to live comfortably without worry of being victemized by the younger people.
When i was growing up the biggest thing we had to do was show respect to others if not then mom and dad punished us.rubber hoses, belts, lilac swithches and hands. there was no such thing as child abuse back then.if you got wacked you deserved it.now children have the protection of the welfare and child abuse hot lines.parents canot do what they used to be able to do years ago thats why there is a lack of discipline in the world today.so why blame the parents when it is the govenment who should be to blame on that aspect.
thank you
one more thing to add on the kids playing on hill street.
i am in agreeance with you that they shouldn’t be playing in the road there.in the 1960’s and up till the fact that albion street is now a dead end street, from cass street down hill street to albion street used to be a truck route to canisteo street.
where can the kids go to play anymore?
if they go to the veterans memorial park they get chased out, hughgates field, even the high school fields they get chased out of.the new skate park.lets just face it you are trying to win a losing battle.
i do take offense that you have the gull to call some parents dead beat parents. but ask yourself this, are they really that? or is it that you put yourself above the rest.
thank you
First, I would like to say Thank You to my Brother Shawn for all that he has done for Hornell. You truly are a Public servant. Just like Dad . He would be very proud of you, as is all of your family. Keep up the good work!!!!
Now, I would like to responed to the the people of Hill street. Who are complianing about the kids playing in the street. I to grew up on Hill Steet and spent my hours playing in the street. My neighbors never complained about us playing in the street, even when by accident we happened to break a window or bump into there car. They were always full of encouragement and praise.I guess thats the difference between then and now. Back then neighbors were not only neighbors , but they were friends.

Dear Mayor Hogan…. Thanks for your comments as they are very positive & sincere.
Yes it seems as if the folks that grew up in Hornell & left might seem a little zealous in their comments. But make no mistake Hornell will always be their hometoo! It is hard to see the wood for the trees when you’re standing right in front of them. Sometimes one needs to stand back and see the whole picture for what is & what it might be….. And not for what is was. But there are other times where you have to learn & build upon you paste mistakes!!
We also live in difficult times that really challenge our sense of right & wrong that in turn under mines the very fabric of our way of life.
Yes, sometimes the right things are very difficult & the wrong things are the easy solutions.
It takes a creative community that can work as one collective mind in order to truly envision positive growth & change without compromising your heritage.
Other times you have to break a couple eggs in order to make an omelet….
I was so sorry to hear about Marge Bantel’s passing. My deepest sympathies to to her family. She was a terrific lady with a great personality. I enjoyed her spark for life… I know that she will be at the casinos in heaven.
Jo Dugo–l954 welcome home anyone in Hornell from 1954?
Is Dorthy DeSanto,Joanne Patti Argenteri still in Hornell? I know Sue Spalding Kenny is in Calfornia

But as you know
Life is too short
Come on, be a 54′ sport
Thanks, Mayor Hogan,
I remember when your Dad was Mayor in 1954
We always loved Hornell,too.
My Dad managed the Movie theaters in Hornell before and after WWII and through the KoreanWar..
He was on leave the last three years of WWII and came back and took over the Steuben ,Majestic and Hornell Theaters again from 1945 til his death in 1954.
Broadway and Main St were “bustling” at that time.
Ofcourse when they took out Maple City Park across from the Old Hornell High, and put through the new highway, Hornell died, all most a ghosttown..
Many peoople walked down or up town to have a good social life on Fri and Sat nights
but now no more
How sad the bustling towns of the Us.
Watch the movie “Cars” and you’ll get the whole picture.
The story of the downdall of Hornell.
If the Town advisors way back then had voted in the “glass works” Hornell would have thrived.
But some the politians then kept Hornell from growin, how sad.
Happy Birthday (June 4)to Mary and Linda Mauro!
The problem with kids playing in the street is this. When they get hurt or killed from being hit the parents want to sue you for everything you have. They don’t say, well the kids should not have been in the street like they used to do years ago. All they think about is hitting the jackpot. How do you think the person driving feels and will feel for the rest of their life after hitting or killing a child. People are not out driving around trying to find someone in the street so they can hit them. The roadways are not playgrounds.

To Shawn Hogan:
Shawn,
Although Hornell is no longer my home, I am still proud to call it my “home town”. I only get back there about once a year now, but it is evident to me that you and the City council, as well as many other people are working very hard to make Hornell a good place to live. I live in Newfoundland now and for what it’s worth, my step-daughter Robyn (15) has been to Hornell with us two or three times now. She told me that if she ever moved to the States, she would like to live in Hornell or a place like it. No place is perfect and certainly there is always work to be done to make things better. I think most people in Hornell appreciate what they have there and those who have left still have good memories of what it was like to live there. Take care and keep up the good work.
Tim Sherman
A special Thank you to Miss Lisa and her Fifth Annual Dance Recital. You, your staff and family are wonderful. We were so impressed . Words can not express, enough, how much we enjoyed it. And the whole year , our grand daughters learned so much and with hugs smiles.
” The Magic of Disney” was certainly magic…….and a special kudos to Jack Sparro !!
You really don’t appreciate a small town like Hornell until you move away. I’ve been away from Hornell for many years now and enjoy reading the guestbook. I’m here in Jacksonville Florida where I get to enjoy the ocean every day, but there is nothing like the small hometown feeling that Hornell has. Those who have never moved away don’t realize how nice a small town is. Do you realize how lucky you are to be able to walk down the street at night without fear?
I remember the great parades and my father driving the South Hornell fire truck through town. The Boy Scouts and Camp Fire girls marching proudly down the street. You don’t find that in just any town anymore. There may be some negative things about living in Hornell, but there sure are A LOT of good things.
I’ve kept up to date with this guestbook and this is the first time I’ve posted anything. When all things are said and done….It’s great living in Hornell”. Enjoy the peacefulness of that small town.
Hello to all my friends back there.
Darlene
About the “Hill Street Hoop”…..
I have noticed the blatant lack of respect, from the children playing ball at this hoop, and the adults that reside at this location. Let me start with the children…..as has been stated by others, they have been obnoxious. If they MUST play ball in the road, they should at least be taught a bit of consideration for the public. Throwing the balls over the passing vehicles, using obscene language and gestures; these reasons alone indicate that these kids are to immature to be playing in the road.
As for the adults (parents), would it hurt you to have a bit of common decency? You are the ones in charge, the ones that set the rules. The children are in school all day, but yet the hoop doesn’t move. (it has wheels!) Would it be possible to push the hoop back, off the sidewalk, so pedestrians don’t have to walk around it? Would it be possible to ask the children to hold the ball instead of throwing it over the passing vehicles? And maybe you could ask them not to use obscene gestures and language. While your at it, maybe you could set a cerfew for the ball thudding.
My final comment…..
I find it rather tough to blame the children (to a point).Afterall, aren’t they a product of their upbringing?
To Miss Lisa and her WHOLE dance school! You had the most awesome recital again this year. It was super and so colorful. Your Mom and family must be so very proud. And for the critics..you know, to showcase each student it does take time, and people should know where to park and not just leave cars anywhere. And parents are told with information sheets what to expect. This happens not just on recital issues, but school issues, band concerts, choir concerts, plays..etc.. You did great Lisa
I was just at Hornell Walmart to return something
that I purchased and I think it’s crap that when I go to Walmart to purchase something with my hard earned money they don’t ask to see my drivers license but oh when you’re returning something that’s the first thing they wanna see! So if you don’t have a drivers license don’t try returning anything to Walmart because they wont take it but go ahead and spend all your money there…because they don’t have a problem with that!
Oh, My Goodness!! I lived on Hill Street about 61 years ago and after a time moved to Albion St with my parents and sibs. I remember the lay of the houses and their so called yards. That is why it is called Hill Street, where else to play except in the street.I know the hilly yards are still there. As my younger brother Dan has said about the children play areas, non existent. As he says Albion St is now a dead end, why not COMPROMISE and let the kids play basket ball there. MAYOR HOGAN, why not meet with these kids, their parents and Albion St. residents and TALK this over. You have to set ground rules that will be satisfactory to all. This seems to be getting out of hand with all I have been reading here. I now live in Henrietta NY, our small cul-de-sac street has a dedicated area at end of street for the basketball hoop on wheels and it all works fine.I hope you get this worked out before the school year ends and Summer playtime sets in.
I wanted to thank Mayor Hogan and all Hornellians for making Hornell a great place to live. I came to Hornell almost ten years ago. I have lived in many different cities and towns and I am proud to have my children growing up in this area. I do think that many people do not realize what they have until it is gone. People should take pride and cherish what they have.
take for example the Hornell Dodgers. What a great way to watch baseball and for Hornell to show off its assets. These players come from around the country (and the world). They intergrate into our community and use our businesses. Not to mention bringing their families here.
I hope everyone read yesterday’s article on the financial struggles of the team. The Dodger’s need the community backing. Please don’t let this community lose such a wonderful summertime activity for all ages.Get involved. Come to the games! See the schedule at HonellDodgers.com Support the Dodgers!and support your community.
Thanks!
NOT SAYING A WORD..JUST WATCHING THE COMMENTS…LOL
Hello Hornell,
I’m the husband of ths user, also a Hill St. resident, and homeowner. And as you guessed it, this is about the Hill St. hoop. Firt and foremost..I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE KIDS PLAYING BASKETBALL IN THE STREET. I do however, have a problem with the general lack of respect of the crowd that hangs out there. The “parents” can be observed almost nightly pounding down the brew-has..not a big deal, maybe it was a hard day, and they are on the porch. But as I drive by in one of my vehicle’s, I watch a ball fly by, without a word of discipline from the “parents”. Let it hit any of my vehicles, i’ll hook to it, and drag it down the road…that’s a promise. Kids, use some common sense, it is a road frequently traveled… if you see a car coming, please move. How do you know that it’s not someone less experienced at driving, maybe putting in a new CD to listen to, or just bad mechanical condition of the vehicle. There are to many factors to name, but they all lead to the potential of you getting squashed..people don’t need that on their list of problems, or the lawsuit that is sure to come. The curfew is a good idea…i’m over 30, and I go to bed earlier than the kids of that house..there’s been a couple occasions where i’ve left my home past 10-10:30, just to watch the ball fly over my car. All these kids are school age…they should be in bed. I live a couple blocks away, so I can’t hear the “thud, thud, thud” of dribbling the ball. That late in the evening, nobody should have to. I feel sorry for the sorrounding resident’s(home-owners and renters), they all have jobs, and some have children. They all have to be up early to be, or become a productive member of society. And finally, please move the hoop back from the curb when not in use. It is a pain in the butt to get around, and someone has put effort into some landscaping and remodeling of the home, try to keep it nice…you don’t want people walking through the lawn, do you? Kids, have fun. It’s good exercise, your not out raising cain, and your semi-supervised. To the parents, teach some respect…have the kids move when a car is coming, hold the ball when a car passes(you don’t want the bill to repair it), and move the hoop back when it’s not in use. Three simple things to stop the big deal over nothing.
GAME ON!!!
To Sal R.D.V.
Yes Dorothy Desanto is still in Hornell. She works at the Steuben Trust Bank.
I agree class of 1954 – sign up and get together – life’s too short not to enjoy!
I think I’ve said enough I guess if theres going to be alot of problems then we all do indeed have to get a meeting going with the Mayor and see what can be done and if nothing is done then we will have to get hold of the media and get some kind of action ! We all have to live in this town and we make this town what it is today and if there is a lot of problem then what kind of town is this for our kids and theres in the future !
Dear Class of 1968:
On June 26-29, 2008, we invite you to return to Hornell to celebrate our 40th reunion. The reunion committee has worked hard to put together a terrific weekend. We hope you’ll join us to reminisce and renew old friendships with your fellow classmates.
For those of you who have not received informtion about our reunion please contact me via email at:
driz68@yahoo.com
Thank you!
To fix the basketball problem, why not tear down Adsit house and turn it into a playground? It is within walking distance of Hill St. Isn’t there a vacant lot on the block next to the VFW? Doesn’t the middle school have a playground with basketball hoops?
I know the James Street Park has stuff like this.
Better yet, close Hill Street to traffic, make it a “Broadway Mall” ala 1970’s. That worked well.
Have fun
There are very strong opinions expressed in this guestbook. If you want your opinion to be valued, back it up with your name. Stand up for what you believe in.
Living a life of positive thinking and laughter is bound to have you feeling happier and more successful throughout your day-to-day routine. In fact, those that make positive thinking and laughter a key goal in their lives tend to experience more daily success and more happiness than anyone else. Visualizing goals and going after them is a key component to positive thinking. Keeping a light attitude towards life is a great way to keep laughter as the soundtrack to your life and have things looking a little bit brighter. When it comes to a healthy state of mind and body, positive thinking and laughter work hand in hand.
Thank You Liz Harris for the reminder…I could not agree more! Hitting your knees first thing in the morning to give thanks also helps to start your day off on a positive note!
Wanted to share what a wonderful time we had when back for alumni weekend in Canisteo. It is obvious that a few have put a great effort into welcoming back Alumni. It is also equally enjoyable to spend time in Hornell. Marino’s is a nice addition to the local eateries. Staff and food alike; top shelf. It is nice to see familiar names pop up now and again on the guest book. Judy Ermy, Regi, Tracy Brewer , Chris Corbett, Mary Kay amonst others, it is a walk down memory road. Although some of us move away, our roots remain firm in the Kanogy Valley, a truly great place to grow up. Thankyou.
The same thing was occuring in Dansville with the basketball games in the street. Kids placing a potable basketball hoop on the side of the
street and playing B-ball. Let me tell you, it was just as much a controversy as it seems to be in Hornell. The result in Dansville was that it was banned, it is viewed as a saftey hazard, and it is. Put the hoop in the driveway and let the kids break your window or dent your car, and not someones elses.
Just read the article about hours and unions at Alstom. Anybody remember when SKF was a big employer in Hornell. Andy why they are no longer there? Be careful.
Anything happening in or around the area in August?
Be heading that way middle of the month.
Loved growing up in Hornell when I was a kid. We had our moments. My favorite play spots were up way in the woods and I mean way up. Or the dam areas Chuck and Almond. Used to hike all the way there on foot.
Granted we had Franklin and Hartshorn Playgrounds right there in our area. But the time we got banned from playing baseball and then having to play softball facing the opposite direction because some window across the way got broke at the police station.
James St Park is to far to go for alot of kids now a days.
We used to have area games in neighbors yards and no one cared. Well most didn’t anyways. Always had one or two. LOL
Last I was there kids that were on the sidewalk playing would stop and get out the way so I could walk by.
Not sure If they were being nice or it coulda been the walking stick I carried. LOL
But its always nice coming back.
Subway still creeps me out but I did walk thru it.
You go Girl!!!(re:Penny Smith)
Well I guess I was lucky to live in Stephens Mills. We had the whole town to play in, neighbors back yards, the resivour and spillway and riding our bikes to our hearts content! I imagine it’s hard for the kids to find a good place to play in the city but they should also see that vehicles and the people in them have priority on the streets/road. If they see a vehicle coming down the road, politely move over and wait for them to pass. The road or street can be shared with no harsh words from either driver or children..thus make everyone happy!
RE: Penny Smith,
You do not know the kind of people that live on Hill St; if any of us that are trying to keep the kids, streets, pedestrians AND cars safe left our name, do you know the kind of retalliation that we would have? NO, YOU DO NOT. A few months back, we (residents of Hill St and surrounding areas) had our vehicles broken into, for no reason, other than the kids were bored (maybe broke). When this “meeting” gets set up with the mayor or media, I sure do hope that everyone that has been commenting about the “Hill Street Hoop” will have enough decency to show up and publicly speak your mind…until then, I will remain “Another Hill Street Resident.”
Miss Lisa, you had a great recital last weekend and we drove to see our nieces and it was worth the gas! This is our 2nd one we have seen and they are super every year.
The new site is great!! Keep up the good work. Enjoy reading the evening tribune and being able to keep up on all the news in my home town. We want to Congradulate our grndson Zack Gorman who is graduating from Aflred Almond June 28th, and is entering the USMC on July 13th. We are so proud of you! We are looking forward to visiting our family and friends while there. Hope to see you all on June 17th.
Does not anyone in Hornell, Alfred, Almond, Canisteo, Arkport and Canaseraga have computers?
Please go to New York State Gas Prices.com and daily post prices of gas at stations in your area so everyone will know where to find the lowest price gas. Dansville is very good about this. It benefits you and everyone.
What a story on Susan Robinson/Pen pales/Cpl. Joseph Barillo! I want to thank Lou Capriccio for making contact with Susan Robinson and the Evening Tribune (Bob Clark)on the Great story that was published. I just don’t recall a monument in North Hornell in his honor. I hope the Evening tribune Capture’s Picture of the Goodbye to Cpl. Joseph Barillo from Susan. Wish we could attend this Special Day. May GOD Bless everyone! Hey Lou, I remember you play Little League, Babe Ruth and for Hornell High! You were always one of the best players and Mentor for all us kids growing up in Hornell. Not sure if you remember me but, I’m Danny Dailey’s Brother. Just saying Thank YOU! It’s a sad story but very important to get out there for all to read. Gotta love our Home Town!
Im very flattered that your paper has run the story of my friendship with Joe Barillo. If anyone has a photo of the memorial with his name on or any photo with Joe on it I would be so grateful to see it.Also thanks to Shawn Hogan for his help.
I am looking for info on a school friend from Hornell. Does anyone know if Donna Mullikin is still in the area?
Dorina Kelsey
Just read in the Guest Book about the passing of your mom and wanted to let you know how sorry I was to hear of yiur great loss! I remember growing up together and visiting on Elizabeth St. and the fun we used to have and sharing the wonderful cooking experience of your mom. Steve and I want to let you know how deeply sorry we are and your mom will always be remembered in my prayers daily. Take care and I miss you!!
Forgot to mention our grandson Zack Gorman’s award he will be receiving: He is getting his Eagle Scout Award July 25th! One more reason we are so proud!!
Well I’ll tell you if you don’t like how the parents of Hill Street kids are rasied then you write you opinions in here all you have to do ” STOP AND TELL THE PARENTS ” We will listen but I have to say I don’t really think its anyones busniess what time our kids go to bed it’s not like they are out bothering anyone and for us sitting out side while the kids are playing ball drinking a few brews that our business not yours and if we saw the kids do what you are saying they are doing { THROWING THE BALL OVER THE CARS } we would do something about it !
And if we aren’t out there stop and tell us they are our children ! But if you all have a serious problem with it they when our kids are downtown causing problems and unsupervised, I guess you’ll have something more to complain about right ! Whatever these kids do isn’t right for any of you I bet everyone who has wrote about this has done some sort of thing like this right I know I have ! Why are so many people wanting to stop these kids for being kids aren’t you all happy with your lifes Leave these kids alone I sit out and watch some of you driver speedind down this street I think thats the bigger problem not these kid I see these kids get out of the road all the time What the problem are you all jealious your not young anymore ! I’m 45 and these kids watching them I just remember when I was young and it makes me feel real good , So please for our children stop what you are all doing , go to the parent if they cause to much of a problem , And for { Another Hill Street } Hooking on to the hoop your going to just add wood to the fire !
To the good Hornellians who helped us through a difficult time, we offer our heartfelt thanks. To Jimmy Dagon: It took only one phone call to you to start the process of bringing our mom back to Hornell. You are truly a professional. Your compassion, sense of humor and thoroughness was a comfort to all of us. We only knew your mom and dad, who handled everyone in our family, prior to our mom’s death. You are carrying on the high professional standards your dad set as the standard. We know he is proud of you. To John Carbone, the wait staff at IMS, The K of C and staff: The after funeral luncheon you catered for us was superb. Everyone commented about how good everything tasted. The wait and bar staff was very courteous, pleasant and did an all around outstanding job. Our heartfelt thanks to each of you. Finally, all this would not have been possible except for our lifelong family friends, Mike & Linda Fucci. Not only did we grow up together, a couple of houses apart, on Elizabeth St., we were raised with the same family values. These values shone brightly when we called upon Mike to assist us in accomplishing necessary tasks in an abbreviated time frame. To you we say, “Cento Anni.”

Joanne & Steve,
Thank you so much for your sympathy. It means a lot. My Mom was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. I did get to see Ann at the wake and she hasn’t changed a bit. I, too, remember all the good times we had growing up and even after high school. I miss you guys too and would love to hear from you. You can email me at: dkelsey4@yahoo.com
This is a new website in honor of a great young man that my son had the great honor of growing up with; St. Ann’s Cub Scouts, grasshopper league, midget football league, biddy basketball, and the Hornell Red Raiders Football team. Larry and Jamie were best friends since 1st grade at St. Ann’s School (thank you Miss Lawrence/Mrs. Jones). This young man always had a smile on his face. He loved life and life loved him. The Class of ‘91 and staff at HHS was honorered to have Larry a part of their lives for so many years.
The website is http://www.trooperlarrygleason.com (sorry)
To the Crist family
My heart felt sympathy and condolenses to you all. Paulette will truly be missed, she was so kind hearted when she was in school and in the tiersmen drum and bugle corps.I last talked to paulette when she sent me an email and told me of the MS but she never said anything more.she brought up our school days and drum corps days, she was always such fun to be with. May GOD be with you all as she is with him.

You know in my opinion I think every single one of you that have a problem with what the kids or thier parents do or don’t do should look in the mirror because who are the ones who are having a problem here , so all act like a bunch of babies! You need to stop and think of what going on here ! You have kids playing in the road is there a law aganist it ? If they hit your car go after the parents and make them pay for the damages! Simple If you end up hit them with your car then fight it cause they should have gotten out of the way ! Simple Stop acting like your a baby your self For Heaven Sakes are we living in a town of no Freedom or Rights ! And For what Penny Smith said you don’t have to have your name to have you opinion valued , Thats your right !
Does Dennis McDermott still live in Hornell?
I want to send my condolenses to the Crist family. Paulette was my sister, Terri and my babysitter when we lived on East Ave., many years ago. I ran into her at the skating rink (the old store,by the Red Barn) many years ago. We talked about the time she babysat for us and my cousins, we were watching “The Birds” and my Aunt Bonnie scared the hell out of all of us. She was a very beautiful person inside and out. My mother, Jackie and I send our sympathies to her family.
Actually there is already a city code sec 267-7. It just hasn’t been enforced.Everything would be fine with the hoop , but when the kids see a car coming( one from both directions) , they take one more shot and then they get out of the road( thats even after all this has been said). That is a lack of respect. These kids are old enough to know better! Parents can’t watch their kids every minute and nobody has a perfect kid. I am not accusing anyone of bad parenting , because kids don’t always listen and the minute the parents aren’t there , here we go again. This is a accident waiting to happen.
im in mobile alabama i still read the paper thank you hey mike and cindy gillio give me a shout frank page
Happy 18th Birthday to KRISTEN MAHDY, on Wed., June 18th. Have a great birthday. Wish we could be there but know that we are thinking of you, miss you and love you. Mema & Grandpa John.
I think the code thing well they need to worry about speeders and people talking on cell phone while driving . All I think is theres always someone that needs to cause trouble for someone and will little effort they can use all there anger towards something more useful .
My heart is very heavy. My good friend and cousin Cathy Fiscina Salzman passed away on June 13, 2008 from a long-term illness. Cathy attended St. Ann’s School and graduated from Hornell High School in 1966. We grew up together as best friends and cousins. I know that there are a lot of readers who will remember her. She was a very loving, caring and beautiful woman. Please keep her family in your prayers. I miss her and just needed to share my feelings.
Josie Noble Taylor, Santa Barbara, CA
Class of 1966
These are the same ignorant parents whose children are being disrespectful in school or in stores and all over. When something is said they say “oh not my child, It was someone else’s fault.” It is your responsibility to watch your child. Don’t pass the blame onto someone else either. STEP UP to the plate and be a positive role model in your child’s life. If you don’t we will be reading your child’s name in the police blotter when they get older and feel they don’t have to follow rules/laws. What are you waiting for?
Every time I look in this guestbook I see many peoples names that used to live here. So many people have left Hornell. This has been going on since the fifties. Nobody seams to stay here after they get out of school. The parents die off and families that were here for many years just disappear. It makes me sad to think of all my friends and people that I used to know are all gone from here never to return. I guess if you need work and want to live you have to leave here. I do not even know anyone anymore, they are all strangers here.
I agree about the last comment ( about the parents stepping up ) Thats why we keep our kids home but I guess that just not good enough for the people in the commuity! Its just not the parents or the kids it’s everyone if we all just agree and things will work out ! P>S why did you take the Name shocking ?
Josie,
I am so sorry to hear about Cathy passing. She leaves all of us in the “Class of 1966″ with some good memories. Thanks for letting us know.
Take care and keep in touch.
Nancy
I was shocked and saddened to hear that Cathy Fiscina passed away. Cathy was always one who everybody wanted to be around. I enjoyed her friendship and the fun we had as teenagers. I have thought of her often throughout the years.
My condolences to her family and my greetings to Josie.
Connie Whitman Roselli
My condolences and prayers to the Baker Family and especially to Susan regarding the recent loss of Richard.
Be glad your kids can play outside at all. How would you like it if the gangs kept you all inside.Your kids surrounded shot it It happens ALL the time. You have no clue how bad the cities can be . Be glad you live in the wonderful small town of Hornell..
Josie, Thanks for letting us know about Cathy. It’s always sooo sad to hear of the passing of any of our Class of ‘66 classmates. Hope all is well with you and your family. Take care. As your former neighbor, I think about all the good times.
Shari (Norton) Pierson
Everyone wish my son Casey Babcock a very happy 18th Birthday Saturday June 21st Love You Mom
does this seem right? They are happy with this.
To get the budget down, district administrators presented the school board with $1.74 million in budget cuts. The board chose to implement $1.4 million of the cuts, which included not refilling three teaching positions, two custodial posts, a clerk and the assistant district clerk’s post. A special education teacher also will be laid off, Patti said.
Patti was pleased with the voting results.
“I’m thrilled,” she said.
WOW I have been gone for four years from Hornell, What has happened? Does anyone get along any more? I remember as a kid walking on the tracks from hornell to Canisteo with a few friends and having a blast. Man Hornell holds so many wonderful memories for me and I hope others as well. As I read through what people have written I cant help but to say WOW, either way it goes I hope all is good with every one back home and they find a comffy spot and relize that Hornell holds so much if you utilize it in the right way. Miss you all and ALABAMA IS HOT… Stay up north
i read in the paper whereas all these political figures are wanting to reduce taxes and gas prices.this is nice to want to do things in the future but what we need is something to be done now, today not tomorow.
in othere words don’t tell me what you are going to do tomorrow….show me what you have done today to solve this problem…thank you
Yes, if you wanted a job and make money you pretty much had to leave WNY in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
Look at the lack of any class of 78 reunion.
Have a good one.
Anyone still in Hornell that may have graduated in 35 or 36?
To all of Brandi Root’s friends, she had her baby on June 20th, 2008 @ 3:10pm, he weighed 6lbs. 13oz., his name is Gregory Michael-Aaron Teague and he’s beautiful.
With graduation coming up for area high schools…may you all have very safe and wonderful graduations. May the Class of 2008 be fruitful and enjoy life. Please do not drink, drive or do anything foolish. How you act now can affect you the rest of your lives. Think first. And thank you Officer Scavo for your wonderful message to parents about not allowing alcohol at graduation parties…Don’t do it parents. I already know for a fact of a Mom who never says No and allows her 18 year old daughter to drink at home, how sad for them both. God Bless all of you graduates.
I have to agree with the former resident’s comments that one should be thankful for living in such an area as Hornell and that the kids can play outside. I was just visiting family in Canisteo for this past week and realized how nice it was that my children can play and walk around without any worries. Living in Virginia, outside of DC you cannot let your kids play outside without some fear that something may happen to them. I’m sorry there is such turmoil in letting children play outside. I can understand both sides of the issue but wish both sides could find a common ground and be thankful for where they are and what they have.
Good to hear Jim Waight is running for Steuben County Sheriff. It will be nice to have someone with upstanding character and experience in that office. Go Jim!
Wishing Kathy Spears of Avoca a Happy Birthday tomorrow! (June 24th!) Happy Birthday Mom!!
We hope you have a wonderful day and know that your family loves you deeply!!
Lots of Love!!
Stacy, Maranda & Darian
IF ANYONE SEE’S OUR GRANDDAUGHTER KELSEY PERSICHILLI, JUNE 24th PLEASE WISH HER A HAPPY BIRTHDAY…SHE’S A CUTTIE.
Thank you Mary Lou for your many years of service as a Crossing Guard. I can remember when you dressed up for so many holidays and when Ray was our Santa Claus on the street. You have done a wonderful job and may you have a nice retirement. God Bless always, Love,
Kim Wood
Class of 83′ Unfortunately I have traveling baseball and camp committments this weekend and will be unable to make our classes third reunion. Hopefully my schedule will permit atttending our 30th. Have a great time all and please, someone drink a tall cold one for me!
DOES ANY ONE REMEMBER DRIVING UNDER THE SUBWAY OR THE FLAT IRON POINT??
ahhhh yes driving under the old subway..remember it well, lived on albion street, what a trip.the flat iron point had a bar and argenteri bro.cleaners, across the street was mikes news stand, the old harley daividson motor cycle shop, the sherwood hotel, brings back many memories of my younger days, even walking under it was kind of spooky,i also remember when i was in the tiersmen when we would march in single file under it and the drums echoing, that was neet.and sometimes if you walked where the trolly car used to run you would find money that someone dropped and we had to turn it over to the police. during the winter we would throw snowballs at the vehicles and people walking under there..funny how people owe up to there mistakes later in life.BUT those were the days.
Thanks for the memories
Yes, I remember driving under the subway. My two way radio antenna used hit the top of it all the way through and I lost many balls off of the antenna there. When we had heavy rains they had to close it because it would be flooded.
I did business with all the establishments in the flat iron.
Yes, Caroline the Flat Iron Building, Mikes News Stand, The Sherwood Hotel, Park Methodist, Union Park. Can’t understand why anyone would miss them, Rt 36 is an outstanding example of urban reversal.
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY DAUGHTER RYAN ELIZABETH NEU TODAY…SHE IS 30 YEARS OLD
with all our love Dad,Veronica,Joseph and Zane
Talking about the old underpass, how many tractor trailers got stuck under there.i remember 3 when i was growing up and i remember it being flooded out 5 times.
talking about memories.the old hornell brewery was running until i was 12 years old.King Hammonds firestone..ahhh what memories burning rubber from the firestone tire company and beer, what a conglomeration. walk down canisteo street and there was rudy and otto weyant’s bakery,,mmmm loved those maple frosted cookies and root beer..gosh what memories.
I remember back in the mid-60s when we would stand on the corner right before the subway to hitch a ride back home to Canisteo. A much more innocent time, eh? The only thing dangerous about it was if my Mother caught me hitching. Yikes!
I remember walking thru the subway after piano lessons at St. Anns School. A couple of times I was chased out by ‘drunks’ who wanted me to take them home . I was in 5th or 6th grade at the time and I would run as fast as I could to get out the subway.
Remember the frozen custard? In the winter when the snow would melt and the water would run down. It was a dark and scary place
My heartfelt condolences to Cathy Fiscina family and friends.Memories Class 1966 and knowing Cathy. The pj parties, school classes, going to the 25th and 40th reunions together. Many more to remember and laugh about. My love, hugs and prayers go to all who knew Cathy.
Remember these places well. Nobody mentioned the cinders in the eyes or walking under when a train was going over. Big adventure riding a bike through.
CONGRATULATIONS Hornell Graduates! Thankyou Mr. Glover for allowing the kids who are joining the military to stand for recognition. They got a well deserved standing ovation! Congrats to Stuart James McHenry, you will make one fine MARINE!
CONGRATS Mindy Lamb and Matt Apple on your wedding day! Many years of happiness to you!
Regards to the 1988 20 year class reunion. I am here in Hornell. I received an e-mail from AJ Evelands wife regarding the reunion, so he knows about it. Teresa Plank(Reep) now lives in Florida, will not be attending, but will forward this information to her. Christina Cone lives here in Hornell as well, I will forward this inofrmation to him. Danny McAllister, I can get a hold of his mom. PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE DATE, TIME….
Thanks.
Kelley Covell (LaCross)
CONGRATS to Todd and Briana Stewart on Connor James’ Baptism, and a special thanks to DEACON Bob McCormick for doing a great job during the ceremony.
i remember the flat iron and the sub way, weyands bakery, all the good things in life, a better time then, didn’t lock doors, what a life we lived back then..
Mayor Hogan,
Was the Hornell area a great place to grow up?Yep,and glad I did.I just wish I could afford to live there again.Job opportunities are slim to none and taxes are crazy high all the way around. The high taxes drive the business’s away. When the business’s leave the people leave, when the people leave the taxes go up even higher.
Why not look at the areas of the country where people are moving to and see what they are doing.
Most of us didn’t move away because we wanted to,we had to to earn a good living.
Its not all Hornells fault, like you said, its all of upstate new york.
Trying to remember….what year did they change the old subway to the new one? I walked from Armory Pl. to my grandma’s on Ontario St.with my two older brothers. If it was in the early 60’s I would have been younger than 7 or 8. Can’t imagine doing that now at that age. Want to know exactly how old I would have been. I remember the Maple City Park, playing tag on the monkey bars, the merry go round (fell off and went under it while it was spinning…scary), swimming at the pool, what fun jumping off the high dive. I recall the metal baskets we put our clothes and towels in and gave them to the attendants…all we had to do was remember our number. The old grand stand next to the pool was dark green wasn’t it? I say it faced the old Irving school, my husband says it was Adsit St. who’s right??? Speaking of the Irving School…when did that come down?
I enjoy the reminiscing on old Hornell. One spot
often mentioned is that section of Canisteo Street
called the Flatiron. Mike’s newsstand must have been
a popular place. Forgotten is my uncle’s plumbing
store sandwiched between the Sherwood Hotel and
Mike’s Newstand :M.G. Lippincott Plumbing and Heating.
I spent many hours of my youth down there. My uncle
Morey used to toss the store’s money bag to his
bulldog, Togo. The dog would carry the bag all the
way home and drop it. No one would dare to take that
bag of money away from that dog. But there was a
safe environment in Hornell in those days.
Hey, what’s up about that guy who rode around the woodhull race track last week. how is he doing after the flashlight got smashed into his face. is he all right?
I believe the old under pass on canisteo street came down in the early 70’s or maybe around 1969,not sure.to many things happening in my life back then to remember.
To Maurice Brill. I knew Morey Lippincott very well. He went with my sister. Smoked cigars. There was an A&P storem an alley way, then Harts Bakery on Canisteo St by his shop .I used to get on the ledge at the Sherwood and look into the dining room
Yes, the good old days. Abby’s, Sam’s Smoke Shop, Park Inn and the Ponce…those where the days. And, let us not forget Union Park the Jewel of Hornell.
Shawn will you ever get a Park put back in downtown? I know we reminisce a lot about the old days; however, Shawn has done a fantastic job restoring our beloved city.
Thanks Juli for reliving the memories of the early sixties. I remember the great fun we had playing at Maple City Park and of course the pool. We would spend hours there. I also remember playing hide-n-seek at night. I’ll never forget when they put the merry -go-round in at the Irving School playground. We never went home until suppertime. Those were great times back then. We knew how to have fun.Does anybody remember when MCdONALDS came to town? It was a big treat to eat there. Thanks again everyone, for all of the memories. I enjoy reading them. Thanks Mayor Hogan for doing a great Job. Keep writing to this website.
Sincere and heartfelt condolences to Joanne Terwilliger, Dave was a good man, and will be sorely missed by the community.
Jason Holley, you speak the truth. Like you, I moved out of NY state years ago and one of the reasons was taxes. I grew up in Hornell but lived in the Binghamton area at the time and will never forget when the county increased their sales tax when IBM just had a major layoff. Their justification was “in times like this our services are needed even more”. If we all use that logic, then we all should quit our jobs and go on welfare. Who will pay the taxes then? I’ve worked in corporate America my whole life and have seen many corporate mergers involving companies with plants in NY state and not once did I see the NY state plant gain jobs. My advice to the HS and college grads, move out of NY.
Juli – I too remember the good times at the Hornell pool. Many hours were spent there in my youth. I believe the grandstand faced Adsit Street for the track and soccer games. The stands sat against the school, facing the track. The track bordered the wall to the pool. At least that’s the way I remember it anyway. The Irving School never came down. They made it part of the high school in the late 70’s. It was the Washington School that came down – in the late 80’s, although I don’t believe it was open as a school since the late 70’s either.
The Ponce! Wasn’t that a restaurant going out of Hornell towards the Eisenhower Chevy dealership? When I was young, I used to go to two of what I thought of as “fancy smancy” restaurants in Hornell w/my Mother & Grandmother. My Grandma always called one of them “The Palms”, perhaps she meant The Ponce. The other was across some RR tracks & I believe it was an Italian restaurant. Anyone know the name of it?
Anyone remember going to see The Elves at that club by the Almond dam? (The Beacon?)
I have noticed in passing that the basketball hoop on Hill St. has been moved off the sidewalk when not in use. I just want to say , Thank You !
Remember WALKING through the old underpass? Crumbly steps, drips, cobwebs. The only protections from cars was the bent up guard rail. I’m glad that the old depot has been saved, at least one piece of Hornell history is intact.
Have a happy.
why did mr softy icecream trucks stop running?remember that tune well.the grand stands at the old babe ruth park faced adsit street.windows were still getting smashed back then when there was a home run hit.the hornell pool was great back then too.yup yup yup mcdonalds was a treat back then.gas was 39 cents a gallon, you could kiss your girl friend and not get charged with anykind of sex crimes.geee the good old days, parents weren’t stupid back then, they knew what johnny and jane were doing and hoped precautions were being taken.but the good old days are gone.new things have taken over.but still the memories are there, just hang on to them and share them with the new children growing upmaybe the legacy might return someday to trust others.
Ellsinhimer? Ah, what was the name of that dealership?
I remember the old swiming pool. Had lots of good times there back in the fifties. Almost died there one day. That Bebe Roselli jumped on top of me on purpose when I was coming up from the bottom. My neck and back have never been right since then. If I remember correctly he was a so called life guard at the time, but being the wise guy that he was, darn near killed me.
In considering Hornell’s blight problem, how about junk vehicles parked around town. Even if they have license plates on them, but have not been moved or used in many, many months, though parked closed to their owner’s residence, shouldn’t something be done about this too? There is a truck on Canisteo Street that not only has weeds growing around it, but up out of it too! Why can’t homeowners be held accountable in a timely manner for these type situations also? Thanks.
Caroline, I got my name from Morey Lippincott.
His original name was George. Therefore, M.G.
Did you dine at the Sherwood? The good old cook
there was named George Holmes. And I used to
watch the steam locomotives come into the Hornell
station from behind the hotel and store. Those
passenger trains came in with whistles blowing
and steam shooting from the wheel section. It was
thrilling ! The first diesel locomotive I saw was
in Colorado on the Denver, Rio Grande and Western
in 1945. But the old steam locomotives were
far more exciting. They really rumbled over the
old subway.
Irving School became the wing for the 8th grade in 1980….and I think at that time they moved the 4th grade to the Middle school…I think I heard that the 3rd grade is there now too…Back in the day there were lots of elementary schools….Washington, Bryant, Columbia, North Hornell, Irving, and of course Lincoln…(which in my bisased opinion was the best….) They housed K-4….5-8 went “uptown” to the Middle School…and then onto High School…ah…I certainly appreciate having had the opportunity to grow up in Hornell/Canisteo area….Its a far cry from Metropolitan DC…..
Oh, these last few postings on the old subway and other places in Hornell have sent me back in time. I lived on Albion St with my family and sibs, being the oldest I had babysitting jobs and my most important one was on Genesee St. Back then in the 50’s I could walk home through a deserted business area and then walk fast , almost run through that dark subway and always afraid someone would jump out at me from the stairs that went up to one of the side streets. Also how about that crazy bridge you could use to cross over to other side of subway. Wow, Memories. The other very good Italian restaurant could have been the Sunset Inn, great pizza from there for many years. It was way down past the Bryant School.I had an aunt and uncle who lived right next door to it. Happy 4th to my family and my classmates of HHS class of 1957. Nothing can compare to good old celebration in Hornell, Henrietta NY a bit too busy for me.
15 July will be 26 years since my dad passed John Ordiway. 27 years for Lee Page Aug 81′ and Frank Quant Jan 81′.
May these great souls rest in peace and in fond memory.
MAURICE NO I DID NOT DINE THERE, COULDN,T AFFORD TO.JULIA LOCKWOOD WAS THE HOSTESS OF THE DINING ROOM. WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN, I WAITED ON TABLES FOR THE ROTARY CLUB, AND WHEN THERE WERE PARTIES IN THE BALLROOM. RECEIVED $1 +TIPS. ONE ROTARY CLUB GENTLEMAN, PRESIDENT OF NELKE SIGN FACTORY THAT TIPPED, BIG (25CENTS). MY BROTHER WAS A BELL HOP.GEORGE HOLMES AND HIS BROTHER JIMMIE WERE VERY NICE MEN. THE CHASES OWNED THE HOTEL. STILL REMEMBER THE PHONE NUMBER 1309. DID YOUR PARENTS LIVE ON ARMORY ST.? THOSE WERE THE NICE SAFE DAYS.
To M. Lyon the name of the restaurant down by the railroad tracks was the sunset. The food was great down there.
Hornell is a great place to live NOW, why would you advise everyone to move out of Hornell and NY Mr. Mike Matacale? It’s not so bad, when you enjoy small town living. And Safety!
Julie, I went to the old Irving School with you and your older brothers. Remember the cloak rooms and the girl’s bathroom on the landing to the second floor? The last year it was used before we moved into the new school (a wing of the High School) was the ’62-63 school year. The old one stayed up, vacant for years. The old gymnasium continued to be utilized. I can’t remember when it came down, but I took a picture of it when I heard it was slated for demolition, so I had to have been old enough to appreciate that. Maybe we were in Jr. High, but more likely High School. When we were in Irving School all elementary classes up through 6th grade were in neighborhood schools. The park location was for Jr. High, 7th – 9th grade. Hornell didn’t have Middle School until later. Makes us sound old, doesn’t it? We aren’t. Some people remember that as the High School. But for everyone who grew up in Hornell, whether the park location was their High School, Jr. High, or Middle School, the one thing we all have in common is that the memories are good ones.
Please remember today

Anyone remember the drive-in theater somewhere near the corner of where 66 and 36 meet? It was before the “Ponce” and Days Inn. I was from Dansville and seldom came to Hornell when I was a kid in the 60’s.
However, I remember coming to the drive-in to see Blackbeard’s Ghost. Ahhhh! Those good old G-rated movies. :0)
Remember the Classic on Canisteo St. from the late fifties and early sixties. Everytime you got up from your seat to play a record or go to the bathroom they would take your drink. When you came back to sit down they would say are you going to order or get out. They were good for that. I finally quit going there, I knew one day I would blow my top. I knew one day there would be trouble so I went elsewhere.

LETS NOT FORGET THIS MAN MY FELLOW HORNELLIANS
ahhhh such were the days of the so called beat nicks,,scooby doobie doo bop, alot of them hung out at the classic and bills quick lunch, days of watching for hoboes on the trains behind the old brewery, the old gangs, the chancellors and so on,wow what memories. of course i might be giving out my age but yes i remember them well. the old drive in.57 chevy’s great years.sometimes snuck into the drive in to watch movies .great times
I was driving on Intersate 86 yesterday from Hornell to Bath. I live out of the area but could not believe my eyes. The road was in a horrible state. Along with this, the landscape on the medians and the shoulders has all over-grown. Somethings should be done, maybe the DOT should be contacted to clean this up? I am sure I am not the only one who has observed this.
Caroline, I remember Charlie Chase. Alice Chase
graduated from HHS the year after I did.
We lived on Armory Place with my uncle Morey. He
died when I was 11. My father took over his plumbing
business. My uncle wisely drilled a well beneath our house
when he built it in 1922. That well supplied water
to many people in the 1935 flood which wiped out
the reservoir for Hornell. I remember the long lines
of people who came to our house to get water.
I agree with Mike Matacle. If you want a job that pays good money with lots of opportunities to keep busy, you have to move out of the Southern Tier. If you want to get away from high taxes, you have to leave the state. It is a shame because when the Erie was there it was a great place to live with lots of jobs. Slowly businesses left and jobs left and eventually people left. It is a nice place to visit, but not an affordable place to live!
MAURICE. I REMEMBER COMING TO YOUR HOUSE FOR DINNER. MY SISTER AND MY BOYFRIEND(at the time}. YOUR MOM HAD A SALAD.IT WAS LETTUCE WITH A BANANA AND PEANUTS. I THOUGHT THAT WAS A STRANGE COMBINATION, BUT IT WAS DELICIOUS
Guess I’m just lucky but I stayed in Hornell, made a decent living and all my children are making a decent living in this area. It’s called “roots”…we’re not millionaires in dollars but we’re rich beyond comparison. The memories are wonderful of the old Hornell and hopefully my children have their own wonderful memories of doing things at a young age. That’s called “nastalgia”. Now my grandchildren can create their memories. Life doesn’t get any better than this. As Hymie Jacobson dubbed “It’s Swell in Hornell” and that is still true!
The Canisteo Class of 1973 is having their 35th class reunion August 8 and 9. We are still looking for a few classmates: Joe Freeland, Cathy (MacNaughton) Sullivan, Gail (Mayes) Wint, Suzanne Mills and Debbie Rice. Does anyone have any information on how to contact any of these people? Also, we would like to invite Canisteo alumni to come to the social gathering at the Canisteo American Legion at 7 p.m. Friday, August 8 to help us celebrate!
I lived on buffalo st. And remember the steam engines. We used to jump on the freight cars and ride up to the dam and go swiming. Iwas at the tracks the day David Alberts fell off a freight car and the car cut off his leg.I hung around with the kids on hill st. Limmie Ross, Gary Hallet, Butch Kadonie, Willson Nichles, Peanut Ross, Butch Lewis &Mark McGregor. WE werecalled the hill st. gang. Went to all the movies at the Strand, Hornell, Magestic &steuben. Swam in the ice box. Ate at the point after picking potatoes all day for $2.00 Topps was a good rest. Big Elms was good. But the best was Texas Hot. During hunting season you could not get a seat in the Texas.I come back to Hornell every year to see relatives. This year I will be there for a class reunion in Canisteo in Aug. The best time of my life was in Hornell and Canisteo
Caroline, Now this could become a great coincidence:
what was your sister’s name and your last name ?
I have a picture in the family archives of a couple
at a party at my mother’s house on Armory Place.
It was taken apparently before my mother married.
The picture could be you. Let me know.
Maurice

There’s a lot of posts remembering some of the good old days in Hornell and what it had to offer. How many remember the Deluxe Bowl? If you go between where Ponderosa and the old Murray Stevens building toward Center St, that’s where it was. Then there was the Seneca Bowl and a Rambler-American Motors car dealership where Advantage Auto is now at Seneca and Adsit St. And Abby’s pool hall on the 3rd floor of the old building where the Texas was. What about the little grocery stores? Wesleys, corner of E.Washington and Church, Ritchmeiers in N Hornell, and my favorite during my high school yrs, Leos on Genesee St. by the foot bridge. Red’s Barber shop was there too.Mary’s Market. There was one behind the VFW,I think Cavaletties. One over on Hornell St. Here’s one, Junes Ice Cream on main. There was a store there too. There was one named Greys too but dont remember where. One on E.Avenue as you come into Hornell on the back road from Canisteo. As a kid at about the age of 12, we could get a 12 oz soda and a bag of chips for .25 cents. Drink the soda and get .02 cents worth of penny candy. Enough for now, but these are some I remember.
To Diana Kuviak,

To Bill, Boy do I ever remember all the things you were talking about. My brother used to “set pins” at that bowling alley. Grey’s was right next door to June’s ice cream on Main St. I used to live in that neighborhood.Though things have changed a great deal, just try to remember the good old days, back when we were kids. Things were so much simpler back then. Today I feel sorry for the the kids growing up cause they don’t know what good clean fun is or have the chance to experience like we did. Back then you didn’t have to be so careful about where we went, how we got there and what we did. Those were the days.
EVELYN BENNETT MY NAME CAROLINE KENNEDY NOW
bill
wesleys grocery store from when i was growing up on albion street was located on the corner of grand and pleasant street, then gary cavaletti had a pizza parlor there in 1980’s,
the delux bowling alley is where i was taught to bowl.and seneca bowl i used to be a pin boy there and bowled on the IOOF team.seneca rambler was owned by bud bush then david bush.greys grocery store was next to junes ice cream on main street.mary’s market was on thatcher street.there was muzzies on east main street where the flashing red light is on the corner of river and east main, if you ran there flashing red light you would run into it.then there was the bush sisters on hornell street too.
Who can forget about abbeys pool hall, i got in trouble for going up there to shoot pool.but memories are great fun.
The store on the corner of E. Washington and Church was called Cooks…Mrs. Oakes worked there and called me Mr. B from the age of 5 (I couldn’t cross the street till then.)

what about Fucci’s pizza, and Rizzo’s and another store on river st.near e.main..maybe gram’s? and who remembers Earls.. 19 cent bergers. there was a little store down on e.vanscooter st? near where jame st park is now.
Reitnauer’s was a store on River St. We used to buy penny candy there. Remember Argentieri’s Meat Market. I used to go there with my grandmother. I used to be amazed at the sawdust on the floor (from shaving off the meat carving butcher block that was right there behind the counter) Can you even imagine the health code violations they would be slapped with today. Funny though, that we never got sick. And Dunn’s Drug store on Main St., the frosted root beer glasses. And Woolworths lunch counter, pop a balloon to see how much you’d have to pay for sundae. My son just looks at me like I have lost my mind when I try to tell him about these things (as he’s online playing video games and IM’ing his buddy next door….instead of going over to see him)
How wonderful, we are on a roll now!!! Talking of “mom & pop” groceries, how can we leave out the little store on Albion St, Grover Wirth’s, used to watch from my parent’s home as high school kids from area would gather on the front porch with their soda bottles. Old Grover seemed to enjoy all the kids. I am sure learning of my “little bro” Dan’s life (after I married and left Hornell for Henrietta NY) just from his memories of the ‘old days’. I remember the bowling alley on Broadway also, bowled there after school as a member of high school bowling team, never did get over the twist of my wrist as coach kept trying to correct. How about that walk to ‘Y’ as part of gym swimming class. Look forward to reading more memories. Happy Birthday to my baby brother Matt on his 49th on the 19th of July.
Caroline, your sister’s name rings loud and clear
in my memory. Another name that comes out of the
back of my memory was Fan (Fran) Beckley (?) who
seemed to be a friend of my mother. Do you remember
such a name ? Maurice
The store on East Main St. at River was originally Graham’s. It later changed owners and was run by 2 brothers, Muzzie and Art,
I want to extend my sympathy to family of Dan Bowker, who passed away on July 7th. His wife, is from Hornell…Brenda Hutchinson Bowker. May God comfort you during this time. His Memorial Service in Tues. July 15th in Machias. God Bless Hutch!
I am sorry to hear about Kim Porter, she was a nice person and she was always fun to talk to at Byrne Dairy.

Does any one remember back in the 40s &50s when all the farmers on sat. morning would park back wards on main st. at the park and sell all kinds of vegtables, eggs, turkeys, chickens, pies and cakes I was just a little kid but I remember my grandmother taking me there every sat. morning to do her shoping
The E Ave store run by Muzzie and his brother was named “Margaret’s”
Later it was called Rice Market….
Now it is demolished…..
Also, dont forget Day’s Grocery on Canisteo St. (right across from the Old Lincoln School…..)
Thursday nights were shopping nights…remember Winebery & Gleasons (a very high class woman’s clothing store). They sold mink coats and being just a child I used to love to stroke them. The older ladies that worked there scolded me and told me not to touch them…haaaa. Rosenbaum’s was another nice ladies stores. The Jonas Shop and I think best of all was Tuttle & Rockwells. What a neat store and how about those air tubes rushing the money up to the office and waiting for it to drop in the basket with your change and receipt. Pretty advanced technology for the time. Mom and Pop stores all over the place and they were really nice to kids. Movies were 12 cents and I couldn’t wait to grow up to pay 65 cents!! Got a box of Barnum & Bailey animal crackers every week at the grocery store for 10 cents. They still sell them but now they’re $1.10 per box. Sweet memories for sure.
Ray, I remember the farmers at the park also. I was just a young kid back then. I don’t think you know me, but I am your good friend Lym Ross’s brother-in-law. You better put a bug in his ear to get a computer so he can see all these posts on the guestbook. Did you see the Hornell Home page with pictures of the old Hornell Brewery?
There was another small grocery store on River St. next to the bridge across from the Erie Bunk House. It closed around 1957. It was called Basil’s Cash Store.
Maurice Name not famiiar
There was a meat market (Reply,s) and Mc Quires market across from that on Canisteo St., near THE EVENING TRIBUNE). I remember standing on Cass St. and watching the papers being made. Stadlemans garage on Cass St. too. Cameo and L&C store on Main St. Bought dresses for $3.98 at L&C and they were altered free . Also on Canisteo St. was the back entrance to Strand theatre cost 10cents for kids Also Majecty theatre on Broadway. Shattuck wasn,t running when i was a kid. Wow those were the days

We just want to say what a great performance of Into the Woods, we watched last night. All the actors were super and it was just a great night in the Hornell Community. Theatre is alive and well in the Hornell area, if you missed it, you missed a wonderful show. Not too many know the play, but it was great.

Was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Reed Shattuck, There will never be a bus driver or friend like he was.
Hay Fran I called Lymon the other night and told him about getting on Kennys comp, He said he was to old to learn how to use it.He said he would rather play golf or go to the casino. I tried Ray
Fran do you remember Andy Stattlemans used what not store on cass st? We used to hang there and read all his used comic books. Ray
From time to time I read the evening tribune and the guest book. Friday morning July 18th my brother Tom (Harris) died in his sleep. Tom had diabetes and fought the good fight. I don’t know if he still has friends in Hornell or not but I thought I would leave a note in case anyone would like to send their condolences. I would pass these on to our mother, Catherine. Eternal rest unto him O Lord, may he rest in peace. Amen.
I think I graduated with you in 1971. The name Tom Harris is very familiar. Did he live on or around Collier Street?
Ray, we told him the same thing about using Kennys computer. A few years back we showed him and JoAnn how to use it. I heard the name Andy Stattleman before, I am not sure if I remember the store. Was it near the coke plant or near Barrelhead Wilsons?
hey ray
remember glenwood dairy and restrant on canisteo and crosby st? mom used to be a cook there and then how about the seal test ice cream plant on pine street, talked with laVerne the other day and was talking about him growing up all his life here in hornell, now that is a person with a good memory of more places here in hornell,i didn’t realize till he told me that the seats at the old babe ruth park were located on the adsit street side facing the irving school.he hit 2 home runs one left handed and one right handed and said that when he played ball there they hit the ball towards irving school.later they changed it around so that you hit towards adsit street, there was a taylor at the flat iron point across mikes news stand and then on canisteo street after the subway there was a grocery store on the corner of albion street, the old modern cleaners that was behind our old house, then kemps plumbing, then amphlets house and terry’s bar and grill, genes barber shop, and the ball bearing plant, from spruce street to pleasant street, hornell wholesale.as i come up with more i will mention them. dan
I would like to wish my brother David Griswold a HAPPY 50th!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE, we love you
Shawn,Jackie and family!
Dan, I remember all those places.I remember Dish Cornish bar you had a door on broadway and another door on canisteo st across from the Evening Tribune. The Star Grill. And roller skating on the 3rd floor of the Federation Building. I remember when the point rest. open for business. And when they built the Almond dam. By the way I will be up there on Aug 15,16,17 I plan on stopping by for a visit with you Your cousin Ray
you know talking about the past has been alot of fun and brings back memories of what it was like growing up in the city of hornell,But if we can remember that, lets try to remember what it was like for our parents to raise 10 children and feed and cloth us all, while some of you were raised on nothing but the best foods monies cold buy, some of us were eating squirels, rabit, phesant, lake trout, bullhead, rainbow trout, deer meat, but my mom and pop were the best at providing for our family of 10 and mom always had a way to prepare all that. We were a family bonded together by love and always took the time to help others in need. that my friend is what makes the world go round.
Guess who is turning (((((((((((((( *1* ))))))))))))))

Happy Birthday Babygirl We love you very much

HAPPY (Belated) ANNIVERSARY to Joe and Anne Mauro of Bennett Street! 50 plus years (who’s counting?) of wonderful memories. Thanks for being such loving and caring parents. You’re the BEST!
Bill Mauro (Doylestown, PA)
ray that is great i am home 24/7/365 be waiting for ya..dan
What’s wrong with eating squirrels, rabbit, pheasant, lake trout, bullhead, rainbow trout or venison? Don’t forget the farm animals or veggies from a garden. Alot of us considered ourselves “poor” but it was only money-wise. We were “rich beyond belief” in the love of our parents, grandparents & siblings and the values that we learned. I haven’t come across one family with kids that have it as good as we did back then. Didn’t matter if you were a family of 10 or 6 (not counting the neighbor kids that were always at your house). Families did bond together by love and caring and always took the time to help others in need. And, as Daniel Neu said “that my friend is what makes the world go round.” Too bad it doesn’t happen in this day & age!
Hey guys, make sure you go into Convenient store tomorrow and wish Marie Edwards a Happy Birthday

Hard to believe it has been 5 years. You will never be forgotten. Please know that you are loved and missed more with each passing day.
Always in our hearts and thoughts.
M. Lyon- It does happen in this day and age, evidently YOU just don’t see it. You are welcome to stop by my house anytime and see for yourself
Bethany-You are fortunate & very blessed.
Mark, Mr. G and the hundreds of volunteers……thank you for a wonderful week-end of Gus Macker basketball!!! The talent of the players, once again, was impressive and entertaining! I look forward to this event every year and am never disappointed. Well, I’m disappointed that Lisa doesn’t play any more….:( Our downtown is filled with people enjoying the competition all day Saturday and Sunday. Congratulations to my friends, Ryan Flaitz and Jason Lockwood…their teams won their divisions. Lisa was home with a girlfriend and we had a great time. Missed you, Cara…next year? And Mike, maybe Brian will give you the day off in 2009!!
My condolences goes out to the Foskey family on the recent passing of Kenny Foskey. I ran into Adrian today and he told me of their loss and I was shocked. Although Kenny is gone, he will always live on though his Children and his Music.
I remember Andy Stattleman’s. My Grandpa McDaniels always took me their for penny candy.Needless to say I remember the majority of the places that have been mentioned. I remeber going to Grahams and buying strawberry phosphate, or cherry cokes.
Mattie’s Sugar Bowl with student specials (hamburg fries drink or hotdog fries and drink.
Newberry’s 5 and 10 cent store.
I worked at Richtmyer’s grocery in North Hornell, but I remember when he was on Seneca St.
Ahhh! yes I remeber it well
Hey Bethany you in Hornell if so I’ll take you up on that offer in August. Want home cooked food and not my own.
Will be walking around the town seeing what has changed and what hasn’t. Be clicking away with my trusty camera pal.
Be there 15 August-24 August.
Hope to catch a lot of smiling faces.
Happy Birthday August 1st to my 2 nieces… Christina Rietnauer ( Keith Cone’s daughter ) and Courtney Dailey (Diane’s daughter ). Hope you have a great day ! Love you both !
CONGRATULATIONS to Jeff & Diane Dailey, the new owners of Hornell’s PIZZA KING ! Your 20 + years of hard work there has finally paid off. Wishing you guys all the best !
i would like to send my sympathies to kenny foskeys family
Congrate’s to my brother Jeff Dailey and his wife Diane on being the new owners of Pizza King! WE are all so proud of you Jeff. One of the Hardest workers I know! Brother David & Family
they really need to move gus macker elsewhere beside main st in hornell..y not use that huge parking lot across from the y…it really brings business down for the merchants on main st…im not against gus macker at all but it really isnt fair to businesses that have been there for many years…not to mention it makes it a pain to get around town…
Also I forgot to say the student special at Matties’ sugar bowl was $.75 that was in like 1966.
I’m not sure when Richtmyer’s moved from the corner of Seneca St. downtown to Seneca Rd. in north Hornell across from the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.
I remember also Elmhurst Dairy on Center St.and Ice Cream cones were $.10 that was probably in 1964.My dad has a brother and sister left in the Hornell canisteo area. I have several cousins still in that area. If any would like to contact me, would love to hear from you.
It would be greatly appreciated for any and all information on the death of Steve “murr” Morey.
Thanks
ALICE CONE–OMG -I THINK ABOUT YOU FROM TIME TO TIME–WE HAD SUCH GOOD TIMES TOGETHER GROWING UP–YOU HAVE BEEN GONE A LONG TIME-I JUST BET YOU HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT ME TOO-RIGHT???????
SHEILA NORTON
Why is it that the Gus Macker has to be on Main St. The Businesses on Main St suffered a great profit loss on that weekend.Maybe the event could be held in the big parking lot on Center St. located accross from the YMCA. It just seems unfair to the residents of Hornell to have Main St and the Broadway Mall both closed off. It just seems like a godd idae to use the Mall and the Center St parking lot for this event.
Main St is looking great these days! I especially love the new benches. But they would definetly be more enjoyable if they were facing the other direction.
I do however have to say that the State Building looks absolutely beautiful. The area all around the building is kept clean and the flowers are beautiful. It is just too bad all of Hornell businesses couldn’t look that nice.
Great memories of Hornell but lets not forget Mike,s newstand across from the firestation or the early mornings feeding the hunter from out of town at the sherwood hotel and the hotel hornell. Oh, does anyone out there know what ever happened to Denise Hilts of canisteo and where she lives now?
With regards to moving Gus Macker from Main Street to the parking lot across from the YMCA… that’s where 95% of the people playing in and watching the games park, not to mention the only real sizable parking area downtown where that number of cars could be accommodated. I haven’t spoken directly with many of the downtown merchants, but I have to imagine that any business they lose from non-Gus-Macker customers is more than compensated for by the walk-in and foot traffic generated by the event. In my opinion, it’s a great event for Hornell to showcase our community, bring in outside traffic and customer flow, and provide a wonderful opportunity for players and spectators alike. My hat is off to the staff of the Y, and all the Macker Backers and volunteers who put on this great event.
I would like to Thank all of the family and friends that showed up at my grandson ( Jayden DuVall ) 3rd Birthday Party at the Almond Dam on Saturday ( Aug 2 ), He had such a wonderful time! I hope everyone had a great time I sure did seeing everyone and seeing my Son and daughter in-law there. ! Again THANK YOU! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ GOD BLESS YOU ALL
I can’t believe someone is actually complaining about Gus Macker weekend! This is a great event for Hornell and the surrounding area. The event takes a lot of time and effort to put on for the communities benefit. You’d think people would be happy to have an event like this hosted in Hornell. It obviously brings in many people from all over who spent money one way or another here. It only took a little patience to get from one side of the city to another. It’s not like there weren’t alternative routes to take. This event comes once a year…sit back and enjoy it and stop complaining. And if you are not a basketball fan then think positive about everyone else that is. It’s not about if you win or loose but how you play the game. And from anything I’ve heard everyone that attended had a great time. My hat is off to all the people that help put this event on and all the players that participate.
WOULD LIKE TO FIND A PATRICIA DONAHUE–USED TO BE MARRIED TO SHANNON DONAHUE . I MET PATRICIA OVER AT LAKE DEMMONS WHERE THEY LIVED. DONT KNOW WHERE SHE WENT.
PLEASE CALL ME IF ANYONE KNOWS HER WHEREABOUTS. SHE MAY HAVE WENT BACK TO NEW JERSEY, I DON’T KNOW.
THANKS
I love the look of Hornell too. The benches are nice but I would like to see a few bicycle racks placed in town so people that ride bikes have someplace to locked them up while shopping. More people are riding them due to the price of gas but cant feel safe leaving them out front of the store while shopping. After having one taken from right in front of City Hall, I will no longer try to do anything in town when riding it.
well i know for a fact alot of businesses lost alot of business during gus macker weekend…its really unfair to them…not saying gus macker is a bad thing just really think people should look at other alternatives to the place its held…no one should have to loose money or business because of it…
During Gus Macker: Saturday morning- my family and friends ate at Texas Cafe, instead of Country Kitchen. Saturday Afternoon- we all ate at Pizza King instead of calling Little Italy for delivery.
Shopped at Erica Lieghs, Wasn’t planning on it, but kids seen things in the window they wanted. Sat. Night we all went to see amovie ( Because we were already down town.).. Stopped and had more Pizza at Pizza king. Was invited in to check out the new AMVETS club, which was very nice so we had a few Drinks. Money was spent, that was not intended and I am glad that I spent it in DOWNTOWN Hornell!!
What the hell is wrong with you people? Gus Macker brings people to Downtown Hornell that normally would have any reason to visit Downtown Hornell. The comment directly above from “Supporter” should be all the proof that anyone would need. There needs to be more events downtown that bring people to Hornell.
i have noticed alot of gus macker hatred in this column lately but by one person only, alot goes into this program.i haven’t noticed anything bad about the drum corps show lately, maybe for once people can understand what these children go through all year long to perform, as a former hornell tiersmen member i enjoyed performing infront of people and representing my home town.gus macker is basically the same way.a sporting activity to show the adults of the area that their children do know how to do something.lets not take that away or complain about it, lets enjoy the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.after all it is only 2 days and a weekend at that..thank you
I LOVE THIS PAGE. I GREW UP IN HORNELL AND GRADUATED IN 1975. I HAVE BEEN BACK A FEW TIMES OVER THE YEARS, IT IS A GOOD LITTLE TOWN. IT IS NEAT TO READ ABOUT THE OLE OLD DAYS WHEN THE SUBWAY WAS BUILT AND CANISTEO ST. STILL HAD BUILDINGS ON IT. WE LIVED BY ST.JAMES, SO I USED TO WALK THAT PART OF TOWN A LOT.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ON YOUR SITE HERE,,, I REALLY ENJOY READING IT
J.PALMER
Hi,My Mom grew up in Hornell, her name was Helen Dugo. I wanted to know if anyone has any kind of pictures of her when she was young??? I don’t have any at all!! I would really appreciate it if you would let me know. She passed away in 1997 and I would love to have some kind of memories of her younger years before she moved to Buffalo. Thank-you so so much,Carol(Wagner)Miller
I have been reading all the comments about the Gus Macker event. I am concerned about the amount of money that it actually cost to help put on this event. Who pays for the set up and tear down of all the equipment used? Who pays for all the clean up after the event ends? It last all weekend and is cleaned up on Sunday, if the city is doing the clean up, is it paying the employees for overtime for working on Sunday? If the YMCA is sponsoring the event, how about letting them pay? Does what the Hornell merchants profit from the Gus Macker event amount to more than what it cost to put it on? JUST WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS EVENT?
We come to visit family in Hornell once a year and several times have been there for Gus Macker weekend. I think it is wonderful to see the town draw so many people to this event. It surely has to be a financial boost to many businesses. We browsed in the antique store on Main St. during the very busy day Sat. and there were numerous other people there that I am quite sure were in town for the event. In some ways, you can draw a comparison to Shop-A-Rama which was popular in my days in Hornell- Main St. was blocked and there was a block dance with different bands. All to stimulate the local economy.
I too wish that there were bicycle racks on Main St ,as well as the mall area. I have been riding my bike alot instead of driving. I figure it is better for my health, helps the environment ,and saves money with the gas prices so high.
OMG! What was I thinking ! The problem is Main St was blocked off on Friday during the day and customers that wanted to get to a business on Main St had to walk so far and some of them were on a half hour lunch and such. Gus Macker really dosen’t start until Saturday. Maybe the answer would be to set up late Friday evening. You did have a good point about the parking issue.
I saw some youths cleaning the streets outside my house yesterday and I am assuming they were putting in their community service hours. I watched them and they were working right along with supervision. This is just a thought , but why couldn’t a program be put into place that would allow them to do some yard work for the shut in’s or maybe put them out on the main streets where people see them working( Main St,Seneca St,etc.)Then maybe when their beloved friends are driving by , they will think twice about it again.
You could have a sign up at City Hall ( with proof of age & disability) for the yard work . It is really costly for the shut in’s
to pay for the yard work or shoveling in the winter.
How about it YMCA or City Officials…had any complaints from business owners about Gus Macker? Probably not, I would think. I guess no matter what, SOMEONE always has to be the party pooper and try to spoil something GOOD for the community. And oh, by the way, I’m not a big sports know it all, but I have noticed that the Center Street parking lot is NOT completely LEVEL, which I think would be necessary when playing basketball!!!! Come on, crab about something constructive, thank you.
To Concerned Taxpayer:
Your concern about the costs of setting up and tearing down this event is needless. No employees are getting paid overtime. Every person that is out there carting equipment is a volunteer, doing nothing but helping the community. The YMCA invests more than enough resources in this event, maybe you should do your research before complaining.
darn lobbyist
Carol Miller which Dugo clan was your mom related to?
There were 2 in the area.
Tried clicking your name for email and just got a netzero sign up page.
I read the comments concerning Gus Macker. I have been a volunteer since its inception. Everything from set up, officiating games, registration to tear down. People need to realize that it its done all on a volunteer basis and it benefits the YMCA. I actually look forward to this event each year and have spoken to numerous other people who feel the same way. It would be impossible to set up everything late Friday evening. Obviously the hornell resident who suggested that has not been down town on Friday to see what exactly it takes to set this up. We spend most of Thursday seting up the baskets, this year in the pouring rain!!! Friday is spent on mesuring the courts, putting down the tape, setting up top men and womens courts ect. Not an easy task, very time consuming. This does not even take into account the time that Dan Galatio spends all year long working on organization and making this event better. We all do this on our own time, a way of giving back to our community. An inconvenience for some downtown business? Maybe. What we should try and do is embrace the event and come up with ways to draw these people into our downtown businesses. I do know for a fact that Mark Morrisy and Dan Galatio and all the people who work on this event do take your comments and suggestions very seriously and they do whatever they can to accomodate the ones that they can. It is only once a year and we need to do whatever we can to make sure that it continues to be a once a year event for Hornell, NY!!!!!!!!
I’ve volunteered for Gus Macker for five years. I think it is great to see PEOPLE in Hornell and we are all volunteers…can’t be happy with anything, so much negativity

I love Macker and I don’t even care about basketball! Macker and St Pat’s are about the only times you can see all your friends and neighbors at the same time! It’s a sporting event, a social event and a showcase for our beautiful city. As one who was on the committee to bring Macker to Hornell years ago, I was proud of it then and proud of it now! Great Job, Mr G and the YMCA, thank you for all the opportunities you give to our youth and our community!
like i said before a i think it is crazy to block of main street all weekend long….i know personally some businesses did loose alot of money during gus macker..im sure some made some but not nearly what they would make during a regular day…why should so much of one town be all blocked..its crazy…i will never understand…thats all for now but im sure i will be writing more…also its a very good point who is paying for all the clean up….because we all no how messy the young people can be.
concerncitizen: It is all VOLUNTEERS!!!! READ THE ABOVE POSTS!!! It takes many HOURS to set up – BY VOLUNTEERS!!! It takes time to clean up – BY VOLUNTEERS!!! GET OVER IT!!!! STOP COMPLAINING!!! I’m sure you can readily find something or someone else to CRAB about….or better yet, next year for Macker, GO AWAY FOR THE WEEKEND!!!! Leave Thursday, come back Monday….there, problem solved, you WON’T EVEN KNOW THEY WERE HERE!! Enough, concerncitizen!
Gus Macker is the Mayors way of taking care of Hornell lol ? The Mayor is supposedly cleaning up Hornell with his new code enforcer . If they are cleaning up then why make such a mess on Main Street ???
so ok you made your point its all done by volunteers…so how is it the all these businesses that it causes hardships to benefit from losing money..can anyone explain that one…with the economy today no one can afford to lose money. and as for me going away for the weekend how can i afford to do that when gus macker takes away all the business and any money i could earn…
whats up with all this complaining about gus macker ? this is a great program for the hoodlums of hornell . it gives them a break in between robberies and stabbings !
Everyone keeps saying , “It benefits the YMCA”. My question is , what does the YMCA do for the community. I am under the assumption that someone does have to be a member to use the YMCA.I know that they no longer have rooms to rent and I don’t believe they have dances open to the public anymore , so what is it that they do for the community.
Well I must be missing something about the whole Gus Macker thing. I can’t hardly believe that one weekend would cripple the sales of downtown businesses. As many have said in the past the slogan “shop locally” is a joke in this area. If Gus Macker is so divesting to your business don’t open those two days. You save on your utilities, wages for your workers, etc. For some they have more people in and out of their business in two days than some have in a week. Oh, by the way were the local hotels full. That may only happen a few times a year (Alfred U and ASC graduation).
Lets focus our efforts on more important things.
Better yet.. VOLUNTEER next year. We are always looking for help!!
I was just wondering why there are not more events held down at the Shawmut park at the end of Thacher St.That would be a great place for craft shows, camping ,etc.
I cant beleive anyone would complain about Gus Macker weekend. I think it is nothing but a big PLUS for the whole community. Gus macker brings the city together-players,spectators ,aunts, uncles, granparents etc. As far as the busineeses down town? I have a hard time believing any of them would complain. How about the sports place that probably made dozens or more team shirts? How about the sub shop and pizza palce that fed the people? Dont think any of them would complain What other businesses would really have been affected? I personally know that people still got haircuts and visited the liquor store. It amazes me that the same people that criticize that there is nothing for our children to do in town, complain when an awesome event does take place. Corning is having a big Race Fever event tonight. Their streets will be blocked off…a much larger area than gets blocked off here, and I will be there enjoying every minute of it…
I know…. I know….. another unsolicited comment from another former resident.
It’s nice to see that the internet has finally made it throught the Indica smoke that seems to have filled the “Concerned Citizen’s” living room, and now that Viet Nam is finally over he can focus all his attention on Gus Macker.
I admit I don’t know alot about the tournament, it started after I left. But I can’t see how an event that lasts a WHOLE WEEKEND, draws thousands of people from all over the country, and benefits the YMCA can be a bad thing.
The only Macker experiance I have is a coincidental visit a few years back. I would have come, Macker or No Macker, but the Coachlight was full of players and spectators that wouldn’t have. Every time and every place I went to eat was packed. The gas stations didn’t seem to be suffering and I bet Wal Mart likes Gus Macker.
Crowds were well behaved and foot traffic was well routed, from what I could see, a lot of effort went in to making local businesses more accesible to foot traffic than they would normally have.
The YMCA seems to be the main benefactor, what’s wrong with that? The Y offers a safe, affordable place for your children to play, learn and socialize.
The whole community wins.
Major Kudos to Mark Morrissey, who continues to do a fantastic job for the YMCA and the community.
I think people are under the assumption that just because they see alot of people for Main St during Gus Macker that all the businesses are making money on that weekend. You are so wrong! How many of the people went in to the antique shops and actually bought something? How many went into the Rent to own business for a purchase? How many of you went to the movies that night? Did everyone run inside the dollar general to shop. Also, did all the people who parked in the byrne diary parking lot on center street stop in for a sale of ice cream and then shop the salvation army.Oh and I almost forgot pizza hut!
why is that everybody is downing me..this site was made so that people can give there opinion on certain subjects…i bet if you were to send some people around to the business you would see alot of the complaining about bad business..some may have done ok but i bet there is more than half that suffered loses..and as for closing down and not having to pay wages what about the people that arent getting their wages and suffering the hardship from that..but i guess that is ok because the ymca is still benefiting…i am a firm believer that the ymca is over rated and way to exspensive for everybody…so no the ymca dont benefit everyone well unless yoy are a member…
When I and all my friends were kids in the 50’s none of our families could afford to send us to the YMCA. I am sure there are still families in the same situation today. When it is said that the Y is affordable, yes but only if you can afford it. Things were tough back in the fifties and they are still tough for many today. I thought that after I retired I would have the free time to drive where I wanted to. And now I do have the free time but now I can not afford the price of gas to travel. And food is also going out of site, not to mention medical care and drugs. And not everyone qualifies for help with medical care and drugs. Just because you are just over a certain amount of income does not mean you can afford what you need or want. It just means you are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I think Macker is one of the greatest things to happen to Hornell. No matter what you do you will never make everyone happy. Someone will always find something to complain about. My kids have played in this event for the last few years. They are not basketball stars but learned to love the game from playing in the “Y” league. I do not have a membership but have enjoyed the benefit of our YMCA for many years. Be it the afterschool care program to basketball and soccer. It’s a fantastic affordable program for everyone. I hope that Gus Macker continues for many years to come. Get over the one inconvenience of main st closing for one weekend.
People, people, you are always going to have individuals who are opposed to something or everything. I as Mayor have not heard very many complaints about the Gus Macker event, true it does require a lot of clean up etc., but so does a football game or a parade. Lets get over all this small stuff and concentrate on the big picture, Hornell is truly a great community,it is beautiful and growing whether some want to admit it, at all. What a great summer between the 4th of July, Gus Macker, 19th annual Drum Corps how, the on going summer concert series featuring all local talent, the Lowes ground breaking, summer recreation programs, swim camps, and the only community in the region that provides close to 70 summer jobs for our high school and college age young people. Complain and go woe as me all you want, for me Hornell is getting better and more beautiful by the day. If you do not live here, I`am sorry, if you live here and do not like it, again I`am sorry, the vast majority love and apprecite this community, and it will get nothing but better. Peace and Best Wishes,
Shawn D. Hogan
Mayor
and proud of it.
must be a full moon.lol.
so how do you please everyone?.you can’t.
.reading the issues on gus macker are good, great turnout, people showed their skills and had a great time.but to see one poor sport complaining about loosing business,so be it.close the doors on that weekend and enjoy the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, eat some popcorn and down a bottle of dr. pepper.and most of all smile, big smile, you can’t be grumpy all your life.
one more thing crossed this wondering mind of mine after my last input.
someone complaining about gus macker and the loss of business.
now how much business is lost from the stores being closed on holidays?
thank you.
I look at this way Gus Macker is for the kids mostly and again it’s about people having fun and alot of people here in Hornell don’t like having fun don’t ruin it for them because your not having fun get involved ok , I went down and had fun just watching others having fun COME ON HORNELL !!!!!
How can anyone question what the YMCA does for this community? There are sports leagues available to kids and adults alike. The youth soccer league alone has 300 to 400 kids in it each year, not to mention all of the basketball leagues from little dribblers to biddy to sr biddy to church league to mens league as well as all of the girls leagues. There is also daycare and afterschool programs for the kids. You don’t have to be a “wealthy” member to play in the sports leagues but can just pay the nominal entry fee to be on the team. And, by the way, the YMCA serves EVERY person, regardless of income levels. If you can’t afford to pay the entry fees or membership fees, go to the Y and ask about the fee waivers that are available. There is a fundraiser that people (including myself) donate to each year that is used specifically to make sure that not one child is unable to participate at the YMCA due to a lack of money. To me, the YMCA is the most valuable asset that we have in this community. I have three kids and am always very confident that when they are at the YMCA they are in a safe and positive place. Many of my fondest childhood memories involve the Y and I am happy knowing that my own kids are having the same positive experiences there. Mark Morrisey and Dan Gallatio have done a great job and we all should be thankful for all they do. Gus Macker is such a well run event and the Hornell people are so supportive that the hundreds of out of towners who come here must leave with very high opinion of this city. To me and I am sure to many others, Macker weekend is by far the most positive and enjoyable weekend of the year.
Obviously concerned citizen is a business owner on Main St. I would be willing to bet that the Antique shop had more traffic on Macker day than they would have on an average Saturday. I bet Pizza Hut was just as busy, Macker certainly didn’t hurt their business.Dollar General was very busy, they took advantage of the day and sold things that people needed like water, gatorade ect. The movies were just as busy, I know for a fact that half of Team Macker went to the movies and thats four people more than would have gone had Macker not been here. How can anyone say that the YMCA is not a benefit to this community!!!! It is affordable in comparison to many other things. Has anyone noticed that there is not alot of Main St. walking traffic and anything that brings people to our downtown should be embraced. Instead of being so negative try and find ways to benefit from this. Certainly more people downtown during Macker than the old sidewalk sale days!!!!!!!!
If businesses lost money while thousands of people crowded in front of their stores, they weren’t taking advantage of the situation and deserve to lose money. How many business owners complain because their business is in a high traffic area?! NONE – because traffic means potential sales. Of course, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink…it takes a little entrepreneurial know-how to get people into your stores – but it’s not freaking rocket science. If I owned the movie theater, I offer discounts for Macker participants – most stay overnight and are looking for something to do. If I owned Byrne Dairy, I offer a discount for Macker participants – it was 90+ degrees that weekend, you telling me people wouldn’t want a cold drink/milkshake/ice cream?? Dollar General, Pizza Hut, etc. could’ve all done the same sort of thing. It’s not like Gus Macker weekend sneaks up on you – as a business owner, you have PLENTY of time to be prepared to draw people into your shops. Anybody who didn’t make out that weekend has nobody to blame but themselves. There were too many people out in front of my business on Macker weekend…waaaahhhh -
Congratulations Matt and Mindy on the news of your first baby!
Really waivers! Thats great! Is that for adults as well as children? I think that there are alot of kids and adults out there that could benefit from this.
I think everbody has gotten away from the original issue over Gus Macker. You all act like someone said that Hornell shouldn’t have Gus Macker and that was not ever the issue. The original question was, is there are way to not block Main St off on Friday during business hours. You claim how proud you all are to be part of Hornell, but yet when a suggestion is made , you start right in attacking the person that wrote it.
Just wanted to add my 2 cents about all the gus macker posts or the YMCA posts. No one is denied a membership. There are financial scholarships available, very simple one page forms. Also, talk to the membership secretary, Kathy…she will work with you for trial memberships/financial aid. We never had a membership as kids, but our neighbors could take us and we could swim for .10 cents which was great. The YMCA was used for youth groups collecting for Unicef back in the 60’s. They have super Saturdays during the school yr and jr. biddy, biddy…soccer. if you can’t afford it, see Mark and they will help you. Some insurances also pay for memberships. And you can swim for free on Thursdays from 7:30-8:45. But, the Y is here to help anyone. Also, many groups have their meetings at the Y.
I agree with JOHN! What a way to put it! I have loads of memories of my youth from the YMCA! Biddy, 11/12 yr old basket ball, Church League! The Dance’s! Shooting pool, Swimming! What a life we had! If you don’t go you miss out on a great time! I want to thank Mark Morrisey and Dan Gallatio for keeping it going for youths in my HOMETOWN! Thanks to the MR Griswold and family, Sue Cornish for a great youth program with I was younger!
The YMCA may serve everyone today but fifty years ago or more I know for a fact that they did not. If you did not have the money to be a member you did not get in. I for one and many of my friends could not pay a membership and could not get in. Like every thing else today, if you do not feel like working go on welfare and let the hard working people support you. Back then if you wanted or needed anything you worked for it or went without. Should be that way today and taxes would be a lot less. I can see helping people when they are down, but some just do not want to work. I know people that always lived on welfare and their kids did the same.
all right already. Gus Macker is gone for another year. Lets get over it and complain or comment about somethig else.
I liked it better when everyone was remembering the good old days.
Dear Gus Macker haters ,
Since you all seem to have so much time on your hands , i thought id run something by you all . You need a job ! Well as i was reading Sundays edition of the Evening Tribune i noticed the YMCA is looking for a part time child worker . Maybe a job of this sort would give you a better understanding of the great things the YMCA does for the community ! Even though this is only part time , i had another great idea . Since you assume that someone is getting payed by tax dollars to set up and clean up gus macker , perhaps you could get extra hours next summer cleaning it yourself !!!!! Just a suggestion !
Jim instead of telling me ( the person that works 3 jobs)to apply for the ad in the tribune, maybe the YMCA should call welfare and tell them to send them a employee. Maybe since we have volunteers cleaning up the strets after the event we could have the community service workers involved. We are not against Gus Macker! We just wish the street could stay open until after 5 pm.
I am sure the YMCA is a great place for kids . I just wish some of these kids that are running around town would have someone get them more involved. I have seen young adults playing volleyball. Maybe advertise it to the public. Maybe do a free swim once a month for these underpriviledged kids.
Does anyone out there know if we have a big brother /big sister program in our area? I would love to do a big sister program to a young girl.I would to offer a safe place for someone.
Hello Everyone
I am attempting to gather ancestory information on my father Richard Lee Van Makeley. He was raised by his Aunt & Uncle Drake. I have only found pieces of an article from the Hornell Newspaper written sometime in April, late 40’s, regarding his graduating from a service academy. The family eventually moved to Arkport New York.(jmcdonald16@cox.net)
I still think the city needs another drum corps.any volunteers out there. oh and by the way you will needs to be rich to start one
Folks,
It’s time to move on. I believe the Gus Macker debate has reached an evenly balanced “Point-Counter Point”. We will not publish further “Gus Macker” entries on the Guestbook.

The closest Big Brother Big Sister program is in Corning,NY. They serve steuben county.
Hope this helps.
I remeber when the ymca had the dances. They were pretty much sponsored by wlea.
they would have Guy Nichols or Carl Benware as dj’s. They would give out records 6 packs of coke or whatever for little contests.
Once in awhile they would have a band. I beleive they were a couple of local bands. One had Bob Spenlove in it. My mind escapes as to who else was in them or what the names of the bands were.
Then of course there was the Patriot down by the tracks.
Those were the days
When I looked at the obituaries today, I saw that Arlene Knowles’ son has passed away due to a logging accident. I want to send my deepest sympathies to Arlene, Gretchen, Ken and all other family members. We used to lived just down the road from them when my kids were Arlene and Bruce’s age, and I have many fond memories of that family. This is a real tragedy and my heart goes out to them.

I just returned home to Greenville, S.C. after a few wonderful days in Hornell. Attended my class of ‘56 picnic with many old friends and met several new ones. I do plan on doing this as long as I am able to. Thanks again to your Mayor Hogan for being on the job no matter where it takes him as he made just one phone call and rescued me from who knows what. Thanks again Shawn.
to the main street hornell area we lost a kitten on sunday.he is black with 4 white legs named mittens has 7 toes please if u see him contact me at sprinkl1@yahoo.com.he was last seen at dollar general on main PLEASE HELP BRING HIM HOME.
I am glad they are almost done with the East Ave construction. The traffic being detoured up East Main St hill is crazy. Cars, as well as construction vehicles speed up and down the hill, I bet as fast as 60MPH. Where are the city police to control this. There are many children in the area.
i left a comment last night about the lost kitten on main street.i just wanted to add that if someone has him and is giving him a good home please just let us know.my daughter is very worried that he is cold and hungry.please let us know if he is ok.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Allen Miller. I am so sorry for your loss.
I just wanted to send out my “THANKS” to my mom, Jackie & my neice, Edna for the great baby shower they gave to my daughter Brandi & my grandson, Gregory. It was nice to see everyone when we came home for vacation. Brandi was so shocked to see everyone at the shower, and could not believe how many people came to see her & the baby. As I told her, the ladies who belong to the IOOF are not just friends, but, are “FAMILY”!!! Thanks for making our vacation so much fun!!!!
I miss you Mom. Hard to believe it has been 5 years.
I was wondering the same thing myself Bill. East Main St. only runs from the Main St Bridge to Terry St. and there are no hills on that stretch of road. I hope Mary Smith answers your question.
Mary Smith, where is East Main St. Hill. I know East Main St. runs from the Main St. Bridge to Terry St. and there is no hill between these locations. Where is it you are talking about???????
This is in reference to the cat problem on Gifford street. I am glad they are addressing this problem with Mr. Levinson and trying to have him do something about it.
Mrs McDaniels is just being a very kind hearted person by trying to take care of all of the cats. It certainly is not her fault that uncaring people are dropping these cats near her home. These people are just taking advantage of her kind generosity. Has Mr. Levinson thought to contact Paradise Garden Animal Haven? It is located in Woodhull on 598 Kent Hill Road. 607-458-5785. Mr. Levinson please contact them A.S.A.P….
To those wondering where East Main Street hill is, East Main Street continues to the left up “Turnpike Hill” where the fork in the road is. To the right is East Avenue and to the left is the continuation of East Main Street. I grew up at 119 East Main Street and believe me it is on a hill.

Check it out!
Thank you,
The Wife
east main street does go up over the hills…where it y’s off at the bryant school..i used to live on the hill…east main goes up to the arc home that is up there….
i still think this city needs another drum and bugle corps.
E. Main Street starts at the bottom of a hill and ends at the bottom of another.
Depending on direction of travel, E. Main starts at the bottom of Tobes Hill and ends at the bottom of the Turnpike.
Kris and Joe Kettner,
Can you please write to me re: Sasha

In reference to M Lyons back in July. I think the restaurant that you referred to was not the Palms, but probably the Big Elms.
The Ponce is or was near where Simmons Rockwell is now. The Ponce used to be a small place on Canisteo st. It was along by The Classic, Bill’s Quick Lunch etc.
It is just all MEMORIES!!!!!
Hey Tim Sherman of East Main is your sister Carol? If so tell her I said hey and where is she nowadays? Miss the old gang.
Well my visit home was pretty good, even got a bit burnt go figure. Seen the old Chuck Dam and was like what’s wrong with this picture? Used to be able to swim there now hardly any water coming over the top.
Made some new friends while walking around. Some real polite drivers was amazed. Since I can’t walk to fast they actually waited for slow poke me to move out the way. LOL
Seen the Depot Museum wasn’t to bad needs some shelves for display along the back walls. Thats a big HINT for the garage carpenters with time on there hands.
Still surprized certain buildings are still standing. Like the one on Hill St. directly down from Stonen.
While walking around was stopping and admiring the old structure/designs of some of the old houses. I know some folks probably thought I was nuts for doing so. But hey have you ever stopped and just looked at them?
Plus some of the folks flower gardens were awesome.
Does anyone remember Bob Ingalls? Scoutmaster of Troop 67 based out of the old Spencer Mehtodist Church.
Hi Terry Lee!
Aw thank you so much you’re so sweet! It was so great to see you as well. I dont think I have your correct email address anymore. Could you go to Fran’s website, and leave him a blog comment or just email him with your address? Look forward to hearing from you!
XO,
Sara
Hey Chris. We are just outside of Dansville at Judys sisters house. We came up here Tuesday and going back Saturday morning. I visited Aunt Betty, cousins Sylvia and her brother Tom. I visited cousins Joann,Shirley and your mother (Barb) and your sister Debbie. Shirley is in the hospital had to have emergency surgery. Visited cousin Richard in Dansville. I also seen David at Joanns. I did not see anyone that I knew from the past. Depot Museum was closed as usual. I have yet to see it. Every time we are here we go to see it and it is closed. I was told they have hard time getting people to work there and that is why I always find it closed.
I was browsing the guestbook and checked out the website for http://www.francisgiglioart.com posted above.
All I can say is WOW! It is amazing work.
Does any one know of any property for sale in Hartsville area? Please email me with info. rayc3801@hotmail.com
Kelly, thank you so much for your kind words regarding my husbands artwork! So kind of you to say and share that.
Sincerely,
Sara Jimerson-Giglio

Re: whereabouts of Denise Hiltz –
Last I heard, Denise was in Henderson, NV
Just wondering what it would take and who to contact about putting speed bumps on the East Main Street Hill. There are many children at play and a school there? Something needs to be done soon about the speeders
Does anyone know when the River Street Bridge will be open to traffic? Also does anyone know when the East Avenue Project will be complete?
If you see my grandson Zachary Guthrie on Monday Sept. 8th wish him a very Happy 15th Birthday.
I love you Zach.
See you tomorrow night
Grandma & Grandpa S.
MY Heart goes out to the family of Darwin Davis and the friends and families of this young man.
My heart goes out to the driver and I will hold all of this in deep prayer.
I realize this isn’t a complaint column, but I have to voice myself. I moved out of Hornell in 1989. I visit my family and friends and keep regular tabs of “who’s who’s”. KIDS ARE DRINKING AND DRIVING AND GETTING KILLED REGULARLY!!!! Why aren’t you people DOING something about this? Everyone needs to band together as a community and come up with some solutions. It’s happening in epidemic proportions and it HAS TO STOP!
Rest in Peace mom sept 8, 2008
Hey Dan Neu-I don’t know if it helps, but there is a functioning drum corps in Dansville. They just competed in the DCA finals Labor Day weekend. It is called the White Sabers. Check out the DCA web site http://www.dcacorps.org or go to http://www.whitesabers.org When we lived in Hornell my husband (jack lisi) attended some of their functions.
i was a member of the white sabers a while back.what i would like to see is hornell having another one.
I want to say congratulations to Dave Cole. As it stands now he has won the Republican ballot. I am proud of all the people that have worked side by side with him. He is a great man. We will know more tomorrow. To both Joel Ordway and Jim Waight great job to both of you too.
Good luck to both the Canisteo and Hornell HS football teams this year! Keep up the great work Coach Mastin & Coach Freeland!
RIP Dr. Susan Wesley. What a tragic loss not to just one city, but an entire county.
Just wanted give acolades for Victorian Reflections in Canisteo. This is a beautiful Victoria bed and breakfest enjoyed over labor day weekend. The owners have done a beautiful job with renovations, and they couldn’t have been more accomendating, to every detail. The breakfest was delightful . I would reccomend this to anyone who is passing through for a wonderful stay. Very affordable and gracious. Enjoy.
I would like to extend my condolences to the families of Leo Clark and “Stymie” Hill. Bill and Jim, I’ll think of you and your families when I hit my knees the next time.
Stymie’s obit never made it to the Tribune, but he passed away last week in Las Vegas due to complications that resulted from a bout of pneumonia.
Congratulations on your Engagement, Christopher & Megan !!
I do not live here and am not familiar with the area. I have to come to this city and would like to find out in advance how to get around this area. Can I now travel on River St. and East Ave. without having to take detours??? If possible I would like to postpone my trip so I do not have to take detours.
Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad!

You can see her on the web if you search Theresa P Cannavo.

I was reading the comments in the guestbook an was amazed to find people who remembered the hill st. gang. I lived at 65 hill st. and then at the corner of canisteo an albion st. Had a great time living there, I go back to see my sister once a year. Hornell will always have a place in my heart. Butch

BUTCH
what years did you live on the corner of albion and canisteo streets, and do you remember the neu family?

Larry Doty of Hornell was the big winner of the homemade wine recognition at the Cuba Garlic festival. He was a 5 metal winner. His wines , Cayuga, Cayuga Reisling, Chamborcin, with the best wine being his Cabernet sauvignon. What a wonderful testiment to Hornell to have that honor. Hey larry, can I still get a glass of wine next wine tasting? Enjoy the glory.
What is up with the Hornell Rural Cemetary . In July they dug a big hole on my father’s grave to lay his foundation . This happened without warning and we freaked out when we found it ! Well i called the cemetary and left a message for them to return my call . When he called back he was very rude and said it was dug for the foundation we dug . He said that the hole would stay there until September . We were then billed in August and we paid it immediately . Well still the hole is there now ! I called 2 weeks ago and left a message and still no return call as of tonight ! Does anyone know of a different phone number or e-mail address i can get to go higher to spmeone who just may provide some answers . My father was a very respectable man and deserves to have his final resting place kept neat without having a great big whole on his grave ! His name was Ron Miller and he was a very well known man of the community ! If anyone can help please let me know .My email address is g_cran_man@yahoo.com
Bill, you have left one of the more curious comments on this site. Reminds me of an earlier person who claimed to be just driving through and asked about a person they saw – but, I digress. I want to encourage you to take a different look at detours. Life has lots of detours. Can’t avoid them all. Sometimes they lead to unexpected pleasures. In this case, maybe a kid’s lemonade stand. So, live a little. Just curious, if you aren’t familiar with the area, what makes you think you would be impacted at all by two streets with names as benign as “River St.” and “East Ave,” ?
Daniel, I lived on the corner in the early fifthy’s I belive our apartment backed up to your house. Iam 71 now so that was 55-60 years ago. I remember the McDermonts lived up the street then they moved to califorina. I sweet on Ellen. A long time ago. Butch
Happy Birthday to Joe Mauro, Jr on September 20!
Hope you have a great day, Bro.
Happy Birthday Donna
For the gentleman wondering about how to get hold of someone from Rural Cemetary. I would call John Pryor at 324-7545 or maybe Jerry Brown, who owns Brown Powers Funeral Home..he may be able to direct you at least. His number is 698-2517
Many Hornellians have lost a great friend today. John Hillman was a gentleman…….a gentle man. He had a quick, devilish smile and a warm greeting every time I saw him. He was kind, bright, funny and loveable. We loved him. Johnny Angel….
In response to George Randalls post I have a similar story relating to Hope Cemetery.
In what is probably the smallest section of Hope are the graves of my Father, Step-Father, Grandmother, Aunt & Uncle & my husband. When I went there, prior to Memorial Day I was livid. The grass was up around my ankles & diectly behind my Father’s stone was a huge piece of cement & I do mean huge.
I carry a phone book in my car so looked up the phone number for Hope Cemetery. I do not know who I talked to but I politely told him of my displeasure. He assured me that I must be mistaken as the grass was cut the previous week with help from the Steuben County jail population. I wasn’t about to argue but I told him where I was parked & offered to stay there until he could drive to that location. He basically just repeated what he had already told me & complained about lack of funds, etc.
My thanks to members of the Kull family that take such wondereful care of their parents cemetery plot. They were nice enough to mow around my husband’s & Aunt & Uncle’s graves when they did their own mowing.
I had all good intentions of attending the recent cemetery association meeting to again voice my displeasure but family matters kept me from being there.
A couple of years ago I also talked with a cemetery employee about the lack of mowing. I was told that it all boiled down to money & the fact that fewer & fewer people are purchasing burial plots due to the popularity of cremation.
I have empathy for the cemetery associations problems, but when my family plots were purchased the payment included perpetual care & they are certainly not receiving it.
If the association would purchase a lightweight mower with key electric start I would be happy to sign up to use the mower & mow my own family plots. I can’t, however, pick up & load my personal mower then unload it, mow & reload it.
I certainly would like to see something done before next Memorial Day & see it continued throughout the mowing & trimming season. It would also be nice if the monuments could be rinsed off or brushed off after mowing. Raking would be good, too, when the grass is ankle high.
Why isn’t this also a problem in the Catholic cemetery. That looks lovely throughout the Summer. What do they do differently?
You and your loved ones are in my prayers. Rest In Peace, Johnny Angel… you will be missed.
Beth, we do have the same problem at both Catholic cemeteries. We also paid for perpetual care when we purchased our plots. Back in the 50’s and 60’s they were well cared for but since then things have really been lax. When we come to visit from out of state twice a year I always bring hand clippers and weed killer. When St. Mary’s was started they said only flowers could be planted. Now there are bushes and everything else being planted and it has ruined the looks of the cemetery. Things have gotten out of hand. I feel for you because I also cannot bring a mower in my car for 400 miles to mow. I wish I could.
Butch
We lived at 10 albion street and the modern cleaners was right behind us, next to us was grover wirths. I guess i was just a twinkle in my dads eyes when you lived there as i am only 55 now. Thanks for the response
Dan
You are so right Martha, John Hillman was a great man.
I will miss his smile also and his encouraging words… To his lovely family my heart felt condolences to all of you. He was such a proud father and grandfather. May you find peace.
Judy Ermy Ordway
May I say that I am humbled and blessed to have had John Hillman as a freind. Hornell has truly lost one of it’s great citizens. The saying goes “you shall know them by the fruit they bear”. One only need to observe John’s family to know the content of his character. I have encountered few men in my life that could be considered a mentor, John was one. How blessed my family and I are, to have shared a small part of our lives with a great American. Rest in peace, John, you have run the race with steadfast dignity.
We certainly do have a problem in the catholic cemetaries. St.Ann’s gets neglected as all the attention has been turned towards St.Mary’s. I went to a meeting and was told what I wanted to hear while I was there and when I walked out the door it all changed.I still think we should send all the youth offenders up there to clean up the cemetaries. Then maybe they would start learning a bit of respect.
My condolences go out to the Greenthal family during this difficult time. Sorry to hear about Debbie…she was a very nice person.
To the families of John Hillman…what a super man he was! Loved to visit with him and hear his stories. He never turned me down when I was doing fundraising either.
And to the Greenthal Family…my heart aches over your loss of Debbie. She was super and though I haven’t seen her since high school days…she is missed. May you feel God’s love and comfort today and always
i was at the rural cemetary yesterday and noticed there are alot of head stones moved.i guess they are straightening them up i know my mom and dads need to be raised on one corner as well.but they want to charge us to have that one leveled out. is anyone else paying for their family head stones being leveled out? let me know. thank you
Congratulations to our daughter Kasey Garner and Barney Alexander on the birth of there beautiful baby boy born 9/22/08, Blake Izak. He is another beautiful grandson and we are the proud grandparents. We love you all and are so proud of you all. Thank you for another great joy in our lives.
Proud Granny and Poppie,
Tim and Cherie Hurne
I would like to wish my sister, Sandra (Neu) Wing a HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the 2nd of October. She and her husband Gene Wing now reside in Dade City Fla. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIS , WE ALL MISS YOU SO MUCH. LOVE ALWAYS. BIG SIS.
Happy “50″ to Judy Cole on the 26 of September!!
This whole idea of being charged to level up relatives headstones is ludicrous. It doesn’t take that much effort first of all and the costs are minimal. It’s probably caused by ground frost and the expansion and contraction of the soil and settling of course, that’s very normal over the course of time. They should be charging enough money for plot sales to cover the ongoing cost of upkeep on the cemetary just like they do for mowing the grass, that should include leveling headstones. If their not doing that, then they need to be removed from that position and someone with common sense should be hired to opperate the cemetary. I would go so far to say you should contact the state attorney generals office and file a complaint so that they can investigate for criminal activity. How do you know that someones not just pocketing the money of people that don’t know any better and just pay the bogus fee?
IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY-IT IS SO EASY TO LOSE TOUCH AFTER MOVING AWAY-THINKING BOUT COMING HOME-THIS IS FOR THOSE WHO I WANT TO CONTACT-YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

while cleaning stuff from upstairs at the VFW, I came across a box full of a few scrapbooks for the VFW sponsored Tiersmen Drum & Bugle Corps that began in the 1960’s. I have enjoyed reading all the news articles and the stuff that happened with them. They won numerous awards and traveled far and wide, marched in so many parades. I know there are a few who write on this site about the Tiersmen. Please email and if someone want these scrapbooks, they can get hold of me and pick them up. Thanks, Kim Clifford-Wood.

How about an official crosswalk for the “Y” with the state law sign about stopping for pedestrians in the crosswalk? Trying to cross Center St. to get to the “Y” with a child can be a challenge at times. Just a suggestion…..

RIP Stymie: I knew Stymie all thru high school and beyond and he had one of the gentlest spirits I’ve ever known. His size and strength could be intimidating, but you needn’t worry unless you were bullying someone or he was trying to keep the peace. He will be missed.
I just read the article about Lowe’s being delayed yet again. I was amazed to read that it’s taken almost 5 years for this to happen. I’m a Hornellian living in the Charlotte, NC area and this store would have been up and running here in less than a year – probably a lot less. If you’re wondering why businesses are running away from NY this one good reason. A retail store will tolerate it because there’s money to be made, but a manufacturing concern will just go elsewhere where their customers won’t have to wait 5 years for their products.
So sorry to here about Jack Stymee Hill, I will never forget growing up with all the park people. You were all a little older and a hell of a lot fun to hang with. Our prayers go out to all the friends and family. I know you be missed by many but thanks for the memories!
Chacer from the Hill Gang!
Driving to work this morning made me realize how lucky I am to live in this area. Not that I didn’t already know this but each year the colors always amaze me. The rolling hills are a live with colors of red, yellow, orange and maroon. What a beautiful site to take in the first thing each morning and again on the way home from work. All the stress from a busy day at work just seemed to melt away. If you get a chance take a stroll or a drive in the country and enjoy Gods scenery while it lasts this year.
I agree David, Stymey was a great guy! I knew him from Kindergarten on and he was always fun to be around! Rest in Peace buddy!
what a great day today. We live in a great part of the United States. Praise God
hey goodie – glad to see your still alive and doing well in N.C. send an email if you get time. Ron
If you see David Vanderhoef On October 16th wish him a HAPPY 40TH! Having a surprise party for him Oct 18th at the Hornell Moose at 4pm

My condonlences to the O’Dell family in their loss of Pennie.
She was a classmate of mine at Arkport Central School Class of 1977 and also a very good friend.
May God Bless Pennie and your family!
Yvonne & family,
I am so very sorry about your loss. I am at a loss for words. You and your family are in my thoughts and prays.
Hi Everyone. Will be visiting Hornell in January and would like to see old friends and Classmates from Hornell High (I’m Class of 62). The few times we have been able to visit we haven’t found anyone in time to get together during the visit. I can be reached at PokerSnowman@aol.com. Hope to hear from you and hope to see you on our visit. –John Snowden
I grew up on the same street as the Backers…the youngest, Susie was my best childhood friend. The last I knew, Tim was living in Rochester. I dont know if he is married or has children…. Kip lives in Canisteo and I think that their sister Patty recently passed away. I think I also read that their mother passed away in the last year or so.
I would like to wish the former Judy M. Sanford a very Happy Birthday. Her birthday is on Oct. 31 (Halloween).
Tim Backer lives up in Rochester and is doing good as well, and has 2 kids. Their mother, Corrine passed away last summer, But Kip and Terri are both still in the area and doing well. I’ll let them know people are asking about them all and send them this direction!
Way to go Hornell Youth Football Junior Team going all the way taken home the final win. Regular season left them undefeated with an 8-0 record and the championship game gave them a win over Livonia 20-6. Way to go we are all proud of these 9-10 year olds. Perfect end to a perfect season.
Let’s all keep Sherry Greenfield Braden in our thoughts and prayers as she’s real sick in intensive care in Norfolk, VA.
I informed Terri that people had left messages online for her family. It has been a very rough year for them all with loosing their mother, sister and other family members. I just thought I’d let people know that she was informed. Give her time and I’m sure she will respond when she is able to. Our thoughts are with her.

Congratulations to my sister (Katie Senear) on your pregnancy and Happy Birthday November 2. I hope you have a great day and I love you.
Kelly, how are you? I would like info on an Arkport Class of 75 reunion. I can’t say for sure that I will be able to make it up for anything but please keep me in the loop. I’m living in Maryland now and keeping pretty busy. I can be reached at pchefhowell@comcast.net Thanks!
My sincerest sympathy goes to the Day family, the McCormick family and the Stephens family. Such tragic events in our lives and we become lost, confused and angry. As time goes by, please look up and see this as an opportunity for God to work in our life. We would never wish such sadness on anyone, but as time goes by, we realize that there is a Greater Force at work here and how blessed we are to be chosen. John, Dillen and Matthew are in the warmest, lightest and most loving place…far above our imagination. A place we all hope to be one day and they will greet us upon our departure from earth. Know – absolutely know this is true and our burden becomes so much easier to endure. May God have mercy on us and grant us peace. May He watch over our wonderful country and guide our leaders. Amen.

what a wonderful show you had Miss Lisa and everyone who was involved in your Veterans Show. It was great and we loved being saluted. The dancers, speakers and the HHS choir shown. You made us cry and laugh. God Bless you and for all you do. And for donating to the VA Hospital. I am a proud Navy man.
My sympathy to the Kubiak Family on their loss
With the passing of Bob Kubiak,we are all reminded as to what it means to “care for the least of our brothers/sisters.” He did so with a wonderful sense of humor, grace and most importantly in his own unique way he allowed all of the people on his mail route that he quietly monitored to maintain their dignity.
May he rest in peace…..
Catherine Hogan
Ann Arbor, Michigan
I wish to send my condolences to the Kubiak family. I went to school with mr. k’s son bob. class of ‘75
Sorry for your loss, may God take care of each one of you.
Hope Rice your baby is cute. Hope Rice had a girl
Just wondering if anyone else out there thinks we could use a traffic light at the intersection of Main and Center Street. It is aweful trying to pull out from the stop sign on Center St onto Main St. You can not see oncoming traffic until you are half way out in the road. With Dollar General as a new business in the downtown area there is more cars parked in that area and which offers less visibilty of oncoming traffic. Something to consider.

Just got back from New Jersey (where gas is $1.67/gallon) so I wasn’t around for Thanksgiving but I would like to congratulate and thank the Cramp Family and all the volunteers, donors and friends at Billy Schu’s. You really know the meaning of Thanksgiving and share it beautifully. There’s no doubt that all 186 of those dinners you served were enjoyed and appreciated. The Hornell Spirit is alive and thriving!
There is a story on the Tribune web page about cougar’s in the area. Someone sent a picture to me of a guy holding a cougar that he supposedly hit with his vehicle somewhere in the Belmont-Scio area.

Please think of Joey Murphy today. He would have been 22. We’ll love him forever.
I witnessed and was part of a wonderful and inspiring program today at the Hornell High School. Rachel’s Challenge is an amazing way to get ALL people to realize the good in others. I hope the students were as inspired as I was and that they too can start a chain reaction of kindness in our community and beyond. I applaud all involved for making this happen.
How upset many of us are. Today going into Byrne Dairy for my milk, I was told they are closing both stores this WEEK! What a shame, we’ve been shopping there for over 45 yrs and we need it in my neighborhood. Please stop and write letters or sign their petition in the store NOW. Very upsetting. We need you Shawn to talk to the officials at Bryne.
my sympathy to the family of Mr. D’Apice.
